Classroom News - Year 4

Mrs Ross and Mr Norrie

Year 4 have had an exciting start to Term 3.  Mrs Ross has been on leave for the first two weeks and we have had Mrs Barrett replacing her. We thank Mrs Barrett for all her wonderful work with us. Mrs Stephen has also joined us during English and Religion to share her knowledge of folktales and Praying the Rosary.

English

Literacy has raised questions about folktales and their importance through cultural beliefs. Year 4 have studied a number of folktales from differing countries, displaying the age of the story and the way in which they have been passed down from generation to generation.

Math

There have been some challenges for many with fractions. The students have been building their knowledge  of equivalent and improper fractions. We have also been working with mixed numbers, having to share multiple pieces of cakes between bigger numbers of people fairly has been a challenge to say the least.

Science

Magnets!

Magnets are the flavor of the month as we discover the unseen forces used around our homes. We have undertaken some experiments using magnets, discovering what is magnetic and the types of surfaces magnetic forces can pass through.

Students will be making their very own board games which must use magnets during weeks 4 and 5 . This activity does not require the purchase of materials, but needs to be made from recycled items that can be found around the home. Some materials will be supplied at school, including a number of magnets per students, glue and cardboard. The board games are to be made at school, created as the children discover the wonders of magnets in the classroom.  The board games will come home for all family members to enjoy.

Finally, it would be greatly appreciated if you can have a discussion with you child about their ideas for a board game and assist them to bring in some additional recycled materials. Could this please be tied up in a plastic bag with your child's name on it to limit mix ups and further confusion amongst board game creators.

Religion

Our Religion unit focus is Mary Mother of God.  The students will explore how Mary listened to, and responded to God in the events in her  life.  These include The Annunciation, The Visitation, Finding Jesus in the Temple, The Marriage Feast in Cana and Mary at Calvary. We will, as part of our learning, look at various prayers in context to develop a deeper understanding of Mary's life.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics was a hit in week 1. Year 4 learnt a wealth of static and dynamic poses along with exploring their ability to balance and swing. Just a reminder that gymnastics will continue until week 4, consequently students will need to wear their house colours on Thursdays and sports uniform on Friday.  Normal uniform is worn on all other days.
