Nagano Students’ Visit

MINASAN, KONNICHIWA!

On 21 March, 14 Japanese students from Nagano, a prefecture situated in the Chubu region of Japan, had the opportunity to visit the College. We were also given the opportunity to communicate with the students from Japan.

In each group, there were two Kilbreda girls and two Japanese students. We asked them questions in Japanese, and they asked us questions in English. It was a perfect way to enhance our own Japanese skills because we had ensure that that our pronunciation of words was understandable for the people who could fluently speak it.

Two of the Japanese pairs were brave enough to present to us. One pair talked to us about the type of music they enjoy and the rituals Japanese people undertake, such as Children’s Day. This is a day that celebrates the life of children and their happiness. The presents they receive could basically make it a second birthday!

The other pair performed a spectacular demonstration of different martial arts, such as Iaido and Karate. We were amazed by the swiftness and accuracy of their movements. We were impressed with both of their fluency.

We want to thank our teachers for organising this. It was such a lovely experience and the students were so polite to us.

Japanese Poster Competition

Earlier this term, the art work of three students was entered into the Japanese Language Teachers Association of Victoria (JLTAV) Poster Design Competition.

The standard of entries was very high. The original work of Sophie Bloomer, Room 61 was selected as the overall winning entry and her artwork was published on the cover of the JLTAV Annual Conference Book.

Congratulations to Sophie and to all students who entered.  We are very proud of your hard work and your achievements.
