VCAL Shop

This fortnight has been very busy in the VCAL Room! Students successfully opened their shop on Thursday 21 March with crowds flooding through the doors in their quest to snap up a bargain!

Students were assessed on their customer service skills and ability to communicate with the different types of customers including students, teachers and other staff.

While a great deal of stock was sold on the day and plenty of funds were raised for the students chosen charities, we plan to open again early in Term 2. There will be more candles, socks, t-shirts, terrariums, face masks, scrunchies and lanyards and much more available for purchase.

'Motorvation'

Our VCAL students were fortunate to be able to participate in the Motorvation Workshop as part of their ‘Enrichment Day’ Program. The day consisted of students participating in a workshop about the '1 percenters' of driving. This included aspects of driving that are often overlooked, such as tyre maintenance and controlling the car in different conditions.

All students were then lucky enough to partake in a supervised drive where they practised the basics of braking, turning and accelerating. Some of the students who have already completed over 50 hours of supervised learner driving were able to complete an extra drive where they learnt about the features of Electronic Stability Control and Anti-Lock Braking Systems.

Students took away a copy of the book ‘Blood, Sweat and Gears’ which explains driver psychology of the different types of drivers on the road. Students will be using both the book and the knowledge they gained on the day to achieve some of their learning outcomes.

Bayside, Kingston and Glen Eira Local Learning and Employment Network Industry Expo

On Thursday 28 March, the VCAL class attended the Bayside, Kingston and Glen Eira Local Learning and Employment Networks industry expo at Beaumaris Secondary College.

Students used the experience to gain insight into different industries, research possible career paths and establish contacts for possible work placement opportunities. A highlight for most of the students was learning about the Seeing Eye Dogs, specifically the training that they undertake and the work they do to assist people who are blind or vision impaired.

Students also had the chance to change a tyre, build phone holders out of wood blocks, plant herbs and start a boat engine with computer technology. Students have come away from the expo feeling enthused with plenty of ideas about project work to undertake in VCAL and about the endless opportunities they will have in the future with training and work.
