Around the School

The Grower, The heartbeat of Australia, and The Grower, The roots of Australia
Guyra Central School were lucky enough to be one of 2000 recipients of a book - The Grower, The heartbeat of Australia, and The Grower, The roots of Australia - written by John Nicoletti which our students are already enjoying.
The book has been donated to the school to enable young Australians to connect with their where their food and fibre comes from. As an adolescent John left home with $200 to his name and carved out a great life for himself in Agriculture. John is walking proof that anything is possible and hopes that, through his books, he can inspire the farmers of tomorrow by highlighting the importance of Australia's agricultural industry and the amazing career opportunities it provides.
Respectively, Guyra Central School would like to acknowledge Mr John Nicoletti for his kind donation to our school.
2019 Rural Medicine Winter School
I was fortunate enough to have attended the Rural Scholars Medicine Winter School for 2019. The Rural Scholars program is designed to give rural high school students who aspire to become doctors an opportunity to experience what it would be like to be a medicine student at the University of New England. The program goes for four days and 12 - 15 applicants are chosen each year. The program is an all-expenses paid opportunity that is organised by the University of New England. During the four days the university organised for us to experience as much as we could possibly fit into our day. On the first day we all met for a trivia night and my team was lucky enough to win first place. On the second day we began with problem based learning in the morning. During the problem based learning we were faced with a medical problem and had to use our combined knowledge and curiosity to figure out a diagnosis and treatment. After the problem based learning session we ventured to the anatomy lab were we were guided through a lesson by the second year medicine students. We viewed a range of preserved body parts and realistic models whilst being taught about the anatomy of the human body. On the second day we caught a bus up to the tablelands clinic. In the morning we had a chance to talk to a local surgeon, pediatrician and rural general practitioner. In the afternoon we participated in a simulation of a baby being born by a cesarean and a trauma patient who had been hit by a car. After the simulations we then learnt how to resuscitate, stitch up skin, use an ultrasound machine and extract red blood cells from bone marrow. The next day we had another session of problem based learning before having to say goodbye to the new friends we have made and the lifestyle of a medicine student that we had become so fond of. The experience was an extraordinary one and i would recommend applying to anyone who has an interest in becoming a doctor. A huge thanks to the University of New England for running the program and giving me the opportunity to participate in such an amazing experience.

Year 11/12 Study Makeover
During the holidays our Senior Study furniture arrived to complete the process of providing an appropriate area for our Year 11 and Year 12 students to undertake their non-face to face studies. The new Senior study area provides a kitchenette with tea/coffee facilities, notice boards, internet access, new study appropriate furniture and an access window to the Careers Adviser, Ms Nield. Our current year 11/12 students spent time with our supplier, ABAX Kingfisher, selecting fabrics and designs for the new area. The suppliers were so impressed with the results that they sought permission to photograph the completed Guyra Central School Senior Study to use in their new promotional booklets.
Our current HSC students are now in their crucial last Term of school and are using the space wisely.
Sarah Rosten selected to tour United Kingdom
During the holiday's, Secondary student Sarah Rosten received an unexpected surprise, Sarah recieved a letter offering her a position on the NSW Opens Girls Soccer team to tour the United Kingdom and France in early 2020. This offer came after Sarah's impressive performances at the NSW Combined High Schools girl's championships last month in Sydney as part of the North West team.
During the tour the squad will take on various schools and clubs, watch Premier League matches, tour a Premier League stadium, tour a battlefield on which the Anzacs fought in World War I as well as sight see around England and France.
Respectively, Guyra Central School would like to congratulate Sarah on this achievement.
