Education Week 2019 -every student, every voice

Guyra Central School is celebrating Education Week during Week 4 Term 3.

For all NSW Department of Education schools this theme underpins an ambition to ensure that every student  is known, valued and cared for.

At Guyra Central School our focus on student voice is about more than just having a say; it’s also about all members of our school  community,  listening to what our students have to say.  Recent research, co-funded by the department, shows that valuing and acting on the ideas, opinions and expertise of all students has significant positive impacts on student wellbeing.

My apologies for incorrectly stating in our previous Newsletter that we would be celebrating Education Week during Week 3 Term 3. Week 3 is the week that NSW Department of Education has allocated for this celebration, however, this clashes with our HSC Trial Examination Period. Good luck to all Year 12 students during this examination period and we look forward to seeing you all at our Education Week Assembly on Friday 16th August 2019 at 9.30am where our new student leadership team will be inducted.

Last week our NAIDOC celebrations culminated in a wonderful NAIDOC Assembly. Thank you to Eunice Blair, Clea Townsend and the Aboriginal Education Team for organising this amazing two weeks of activities and for  our wonderful assembly, there were too many people involved to name each individually. Please take the time to look at the photographs of the classroom and whole school creative activities that occurred during Week 1 and Week 2 that are available in this edition of the Newsletter. Thank you to the staff for their flexibility and commitment to the success of this years event, including our Canteen staff for their amazing NAIDOC Jelly. We enjoyed an amazing attendance by our community at our NAIDOC assembly and our children did not disappoint with their performances, the vibe within the school gymnasium was fabulous. Thank you to all of our students for their participation and commitment to maintaining an equitable learning environment at Guyra Central School. Please take the time to come into the school and look at the wonderful PBL Banners that have been created for our school by local artist, Brian Irving. Thank you also to Uncle Bob Blair for his wonderful 2 day commitment to our school during the celebrations to work with our dance teams.

I know that we are currently running short of water in Guyra  but I do need to say "There must be something in the Guyra water". We are having incredible success with all of our sporting teams at present, some would say that we are 'punching way above our weight'. Take the time to look at our coverage of some of those successes in this newsletter. Our sports students are really keeping Guyra on the map across the state, nation and again internationally.

Jokes aside, these sort of successes do not happen by accident. Can I take the opportunity to thank our school staff, student parent group and our supporting agencies for all of the behind the scenes work that happens to ensure that Guyra Central School students are given every opportunity to shine and thrive.

I would like to also thank Christine and her team at the Hub for the amazing work that they have done as a partnership with the school during 2019 to assist parents locate and obtain birth certificates for our students. In some instances this has been a big challenge and we can say that this partnership has been very successful. Thank you to the Hub for their commitment and efforts to improve learning outcomes for the students at Guyra Central School.

Thanks again to the whole community for your ongoing support for our school. If there is anything at all that you would like to speak to me about please contact me at the school on (02) 6779 0844

Thank you
