Campbell Diamond Performs Brazilian Samba

Campbell Diamond visited Girton on the 10th of October. Campbell is a renowned Classical Guitarist, originally hailing from Dubbo. Campbell studied with Tim Kain at the Australian National University and then with Hubert Käppel at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Cologne Germany. Campbell has achieved remarkable success in top flight competitions worldwide, making him one of the most successful Guitarists of his generation. Most recently he won first prize at the Vienna International Guitar Competition.

Campbell worked with VCE Guitar Students in a fruitful masterclass. He gave valuable insights into both technique and the interpretation of different styles of music. Then, Girton’s Guitarists and the Year 9 Music class were treated to an astonishing recital by Campbell in the Black Box. Campbell performed at a world class standard, giving students the experience of hearing varied and expressive repertoire delivered in a virtuosic manner. Campbell treated the audience to everything from late classical masterpieces by Niccolo Paganini, to Brazilian samba arranged for solo guitar. Following the recital Girton students were able to participate in a Q & A session with Campbell. He was able to speak on his experiences studying at a tertiary level both in Australia and abroad, his philosophy and routine in regard to practice, his approach when interpreting new repertoire and many other topics. Campbell is soon moving to San Francisco to commence further study, but hopes to visit Girton again in the near future.
