Partnership between EHS Library and  Blacktown City Libraries

We are building up a partnership with our local library - Blacktown City Libraries that operate libraries in Blacktown, Stanhope Gardens, Mount Druitt, Lalor Park and Riverstone. By establishing this collaboration for lifelong learning between EHS library and Blacktown City Libraries, both can work together to serve our youth and teens in meeting their curricular needs.

Our students were encouraged to join Blacktown City Library for free (if they are not already members) so that they can access the large collection of materials and digital resources available.

The Teacher Librarian will be liaising with the Youth Development Officers at Blacktown City Libraries to organize the new cards for students who will receive them in their roll call classes once they are ready.

New Books Display / Resources

We are continually getting fantastic new reading resources on our shelves, including fiction, non-fiction, bilingual picture books, quick reads and graphic novels. Please visit your library and check out some of our newest titles as we are sure you will be able to find an amazing read.

We have recently purchased new chess and draughts sets because a large number of our students enjoy playing these games at recess and lunchtime. Playing chess helps students develop thinking skills and helps students to develop patience and thoughtfulness.

We have also purchased a number of new series to add to our collection; Nancy Drew Diaries by Carolyn Keene, Alice – Miranda series by Jacqueline Harvey, David Walliams series and Andy Griffiths series. Please visit your library and check out these new titles.

Below are the links to these well-known interesting authors to learn more about their engaging and very popular books.

Our newest magazine Bella rae is an independent Australian magazine for high school aged girls. It is printed quarterly and it contains a vibrant collection of inspiring real stories, expert advice on relevant issues e.g. study stress and mental health, recipes, artwork, craft, practical wisdom, ideas about navigating relationships (including family and friendships), healthy living education and a diverse representation of women – various ages, body shapes, hairstyles, skin tones and ethnicities.

Returning Library Items

Students are reminded that it is their responsibility to return their books on time to the library so that other students can borrow them. Students need to come to the circulation desk and ask library staff for an extension time on their loan if they still need more time to finish reading a book. Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

Book Week 2019

We will be celebrating CBCA Book Week in week 6 this term at our school. To celebrate reading , the following events have been organised:

  • Authortalks by Mr Tohby Riddle and Mr John Heffernan with year 7 and LAF classes
  • Evans Great Read-In afternoon with afternoon tea
  • Special Book week display in the library

A special thank you to our two highly motivated library monitors in year 10:

Evan Diego and Qudrat Abbasi who have been helping me organise various things for Book Week. Evan Diego prepared a Book week PowerPoint presentation to inform our school community about book week celebration. Qudrat and Evan used Canva to make fantastic book week posters.

Website Evaluation Lessons – Year 11 PMF

During Year 11 PMF classes, students have been learning about the importance of website evaluation since they are relying more than ever on finding information for their essays and research tasks online. Hence it is crucial for students to learn to distinguish the good information from the bad in an effective and efficient manner.

Students were introduced to 'the 5W's of website evaluation'. The 5W’s stand for Who (authority) / What (relevancy) / When (currency) / Where (accuracy) / and Why (purpose).  They brainstormed in pairs what makes a website useful for research and watched the 5W’s video. The Teacher Librarian explained in detail the 5W’s through a PowerPoint presentation.

Please check out this short video link to learn more about this method of evaluating websites:

National Science Week Display

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Thousands of individuals – from students, to scientists, to chefs and musicians – get involved by taking part in more than 1000 science events across the nation. This year’s theme is, 'Destination Moon: More Missions – More Science'. This theme is a way for teachers and their students to discover past missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems—and current and future space programs, operations and missions.

Year 8 students have been learning about how to reduce energy use and how to design energy efficient homes to reduce the heat between the environment in their science classes. A number of them created outstanding house models that are on display in our library as part of the national science week display.

Year 8 Information Literacy Classes

“Our Digital Footprint”

Year 8 students have been learning about our digital footprint during their library lessons. They learnt what a digital footprint is, its importance, how to manage it and how to create a positive personal online footprint.

Students created Google slideshows on their digital footprint.

Please check out this short video link to learn more about our digital footprint:

Booktalks

The teacher librarian has been doing book talks during year 8 library lessons to engage students in new books and encourage them to read more. A book talk is not a review nor a report. It is a short presentation about a book with the goal of convincing students to read it. Students seem to have enjoyed the two book talks presented on Brindabella by Ursula Dubosarsky and Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison (from the CBCA Book Week Shortlist).

Parents’ Guide to Online Safety

Many parents and caregivers are feeling out of their depth when it comes to following up on their children’s use of devices and the internet. The Office of The E-Safety Commissioner is a highly recommended resource that parents and carers can use to assist their children when dealing with online safety e.g. cyberbullying, time online, gaming and unwanted contact.

Check out the following link for resources that are available in multiple languages. In addition, parents who are unfamiliar with using computers can order hard copies for free.
