Deputy Principals' Reports

Mrs Kerry Doyle (Years 8, 10, 12)

Year 10 have been working towards the transition to being seniors at Evans High School at the end of last term and the past number of weeks. Students have been preparing for senior studies by:

  • Completing minimum Standards Testing.
  • Undertaking taster lessons and experiencing senior studies, learning the requirements of the courses and seeing if it is what they are genuinely interested in.
  • Having a meeting with the Careers Advisor to discuss their career and study options for Year 11 and beyond.

The Subject Selection Evening for Year 10 will occur on Thursday August 29th, where I will discuss HSC pathways as well as options for study. In addition, individual subjects will be discussed with parents outlining what the course will look like in senior years and the requirements of students to be successful and excel in their courses.

Year 12 have been working very hard completing their Trial HSC examinations. These results will go towards their assessment marks and will be submitted to NESA, contributing towards their final HSC marks. There have been major projects due in for Society and Culture as well as Industrial Technology. It is wonderful to see the depth of learning in our students. HSC major projects will be due in the coming weeks for Music and Visual Arts.

Many students are counting down the weeks left as final pieces of work are due. Forthcoming events such as the formal on the 24th September and graduation on the 26th September are exciting occasions we look forward to. Whilst we look forward to these positive experiences it is really important that students maximise these last few weeks of learning and class time. Students are expected to be in classes, completing homework and maintaining full school uniform until September 26th.

  • 20th September - All Together Day at Luna Park
  • 24th September - Formal
  • 26th September - Graduation

Year 8 have had a significant number of new students join the cohort and as a result we have engaged a whole new class. This is very late in the year, however it allows us to provide small class sizes and individualised learning to our students. This will be commencing week 6 this term. Parents and carers of any affected students will be contacted by week 5.

The Year 8 ‘Eco House’ Science Assessment Task was very well completed and it was an excellent opportunity to see project based learning in action. We also saw some fantastic teamwork in 8W  as they worked together to make roller coasters to demonstrate the different types of energy. We continue to support the one to one laptop program and we are awaiting an order of chrome books to arrive which will support our new Year 8 students.

We will be hosting a subject selection evening on Thursday 19th September for parents and carers of students in year 8 moving into year 9 next year. This information session will assist both parents and students in choosing subjects to study in years 9 and 10. Further information will be sent home at a later date.

Intensive English Centre Deputy Principal

Mrs Mee Liau

In Term 3, the Intensive English Centre started with 135 students remaining, after 63 had transitioned onto various high schools or TAFE. Currently we have 175 students and 15 classes with diverse visa categories ranging from internationals to bridging visas, skilled permanent migrations and refugees.

After a busy first week of large international student enrolments, we hosted a study tour from Shenzhen, China; 20 students between 13 to 15- year- old and 4 teachers. The study tour is part of DE International Study Tours Program which brings international student groups into our schools to provide a unique insight into our school culture, facilities and educational system. The 20 students were divided into 5 groups and placed in classes across the IEC and the high school for 3 school days. They attended 2 excursions; one to Featherdale Wildlife Park and the other on a Hawkesbury River Paddle wheeler cruise with a traditional Australian live band. The overall feedback from the visitors showed their appreciation towards the school and their student buddies. I wish to thank teachers and SASS staff who had taken on extra work to showcase the school.

Corporate employment soft skills mentoring started this term with ABCN (Australian Business Community Network). Stage 5 and 6 IEC students supervised by Ms Fernando would be attending 5 sessions at CSR over eight weeks.

The Health Screening Program delivered by NSW Refugee Health Service will re-commence this term in Week 6, offering onsite vision and hearing checks and referrals to paramedical health providers when needed.
