Art students trade classroom for coast

On Thursday 5 September the Year 9 Art and Visual Design class swapped the classroom for the coast, as part of their consideration of ‘place’.

The group of 15 explored Five Mile Beach, documenting their experiences through artmaking. Teacher Bernadette Neeling and the students were joined by Daniel de la Motte and had a cheeky stopover at Seven Mile Beach on the way home for some chips! The students will be sharing their artwork at the Year 9 – 12 exhibition later this term.

Every drop counts

At the end of last term Nursing and Health Studies students were visited by the Red Cross to learn the importance of blood donation.

College visited by First Fleet

Year 4 students filed the following reports on Colonial Day.

On 17 September we went to the Nagle Centre to watch a colonial experience to help us understand what it was like in the 1700s. The people included us in the performance and sorted us into groups to put us on six First Fleet ships. The activities were fun and good for our bodies. Some experiences were wet or scary and some were funny! We learnt about the convicts’ punishments and some were TERRIFYING but didn’t hurt us because we were just acting.

On Colonial Day we went to see a performance from the time of the First Fleet. My favourite part was when Maggie and Aoife got pig fat on their hands (soap). I also enjoyed when we got to hold one of the weapons that they used. I did not enjoy when the loud music started playing and sergeant was shouting because I could not hear what they were saying. I think that it was a great performance and made us think about the First Fleet.

The play was amazing. They involved people in it so that everybody could enjoy the show. They treated us like convicts in Van Dieman’s Land. They let us on the stage with some of us pretending to be soldiers, drummers, the Black Velvet Band girl, and a rich man. They improvised when we weren’t sure what to do. I think this was a great experience to have.

Colonial Day was a great experience for the Year 4 classes. We really got to experience what it was like in the 1700s. They showed us life in the 1700s by letting us experience the way convicts got treated and the work they did. They taught us about the First Fleet travelling from England to Van Dieman’s Land. We learnt how soldiers would act towards the French army and how to hold their weapons such as a pistol or the pike.

We sang songs such as Bound for Botany Bay and the Black Velvet Band. We learnt some cockney slang which is a British language that you would say a rhyming word such as ‘baked beans’ which means ‘queens’ or ‘apples and pears’ which means ‘stairs’ and ‘dust bin lid’ which means ‘kids’. It was fun to learn cockney slang. As they were telling us about the convicts and the First Fleet, they acted it out as if they were really there and treated us like convicts. The show was very interactive as they threw water at us and let us dress up like in the 1700s.

Year 6 tour nation's capital

As part of our Year 6 educational program, students study the qualities of good leadership and the importance of democracy.

On Sunday 22 September our Year 6 classes embarked on a five-day educational tour of Canberra, where they participated in a variety of programs focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The packed program included a visit to Parliament House, the National Gallery, The Geoscience Centre, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National War Memorial and the Mint.

Along with many other cultural experiences, a visit to Floriade – a flower and entertainment festival held annually in Canberra’s Commonwealth Park – is always a highlight of this memorable trip.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national capital as part of their civics and citizenship education.

To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program toward travel expenses incurred.

We know that this excursion was a rewarding and memorable experience for all students and would like to thank the Australian Government for their support.

Upon the students’ return, the College received several communications from various members of the public (including their bus driver whilst in Canberra) with words of praise of our students’ exemplary conduct and manners.

Law-making in action

Year 8 Humanities and Social Science students visited Parliament at the end of Term 3. The students learnt about how laws are made and changed in Tasmania. They were fortunate to visit both Houses of Parliament: The House of Assembly and the Legislative Council. On the way out we said hello to Senator Jackie Lambie.

University of Tasmania awards

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Science and Engineering Investigation Awards, held at the University of Tasmania. Thirty-five of our students in Years 6-11 attended the Awards Presentation on Wednesday 18 September, winning 20 prizes. The details can be found here

This is a remarkable achievement on the part of all of the students.  Their investigations were varied, meaningful and of an excellent standard.  These outstanding results reflect the hard work and commitment of both the students and the Science staff.  If you get a chance to congratulate the students and ask them about their investigations, I know that they will appreciate your interest and recognition of their success.  They were very proud and excited.
