School Council

Message from David Lee - School Council President

What I learned being on the School Council

It wasn’t an easy decision to step away from the School Council after 3 years, but I’m excited to see what the next School Council Committee will achieve!  It has definitely been quite the experience - rewarding, challenging, emotional, all of the above! But one I’m so glad to have gone through and learnt a lot from.

As I reflect back on my time in the council, and also working with Amanda and Chris on a pilot coding program, as well as being a parent in the community, there’s a few particular aspects I’ll always remember.

Firstly, the students!  I am so amazed at their curiosity and resilience.  Combined with their compassion and creativity, whether it’s a tricky numeracy problem, coding a website, honing their sporting skills, or challenging themselves with the intricacy of a musical instrument - they continue to inspire me with their willingness to take on new challenges, and kindness to the community.

Speaking about our students, how many times have they been so thrilled to go back to school?  Yes I know they can’t wait to see their friends, but a huge part is the classroom environment that the teachers have created.  There are countless hours the teachers put in behind the scenes, from getting to know the children and us parents as individuals, as well as preparing to make each day a joyful, life learning experience for our children.  Because they are passionate about their schooling journey, and because they care. As a parent, witnessing your children’s love of learning is such a precious gift.

I’ve been so lucky to grow up in this amazing country we call Australia, and at the same time I’ve also been so lucky to learn more about many other cultures through other parents, who have so openly and warmly shared them with me.  From Ghana, Spain, Greece, Colombia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Iran, Egypt, China, Korea, Japan - this says a lot about the kindness of many of the families here, and how much we truly have in common.

Where else in the world could this happen?  It has made me a better person, for which I’ll be forever grateful.

Thank you again for the opportunity and privilege to serve the Mount View Community.

Until next time,

David Lee
