Hear ye, Hear ye!

In History this term, Year 8 have been studying the Medieval era and on 25 May, students had the opportunity to engage in a Medieval Faire for the duration of the school day.

A variety of activities were planned so that students could interact with concepts they have been learning about in History class.

James Arthur, a visitor from Historic Enterprises, showcased a collection of medieval weapons and memorabilia. Students were able to try on chainmail and helmets, learn how weapons were utilised, and meet a dashing knight in shining armor.

Afterwards, Year 8 broke bread together at a banquet table with delicacies such as roast chicken, cheese, bread, and tarts (cutlery not included). Mrs. Stewart taught the year group about 'Illuminated Letters' and students were able to create their own Illuminated Letter masterpiece using the first letter of their name.

Following the Illuminated Letter workshop, the kingdoms of 8R and 8G engaged in a pool noodle jousting tournament to see which class would reign superior. The joust was close, but in the end 8G took home the (chocolate) gold coin trophy. Finally, to end the day, Year 8 had to work together to solve the puzzle in Mrs. Rebel's 'Black Death Escape Room.' Students were eager to witness History come to life during the Medieval Faire and are excited to continue to study the Medieval period throughout the term.

Crackerjack morning, running on the mountain!

On Friday 6 May, 37 primary students from NCS headed up to Brown's Mountain near Tapitallee, for the second ever CSSA South Coast Zone Cross Country event. Windy conditions helped dry out a muddy course, but made racing quite tricky for our younger students.

Parents, carers, other relatives and friends braved the chiily weather early on to cheer our boys and girls. Only a week earlier, the primary students had raced over an 800m 'competitors only' short course at school, so they were a little 'under-done' with all the wet weather making training or competing pretty tough.

This event was definitely a step up, in terms of the quality of the competition and the difficulty of a hilly course. The winding route gave spectators many terrific vantage points to take photographs and provide vociferous encouragement to the runners.

All the students deserved medals for competing to the best of their abilities on the day, but it was deemed that the top three finishers in each race were actually awarded bronze, silver or gold medals.

NCS had medal successes with Tianna K, who ran 10:05:00 for her 2 km. race, finishing 2nd. Sienna S. ran 10:38:65 for her 2 km race, finishing 3rd. Elsie P. ran 14:28:75 for her 3 km. race, finishing 2nd. Toby G. ran 9:02:63 for his 2 km. race, finishing 2nd. We also had top 10 finishes from Mitchell P, Flynn S, Zoe C. and Penny J. Your training and efforts paid dividends! The top 4 finishers from NCS in each age event have qualified to represent our school and our zone at the State Cross Country event in Sydney. That's 14 boys and 16 girls, 30 in total. Well done one and all! Keep up the training!

The King and Queen of Green

Stage 2 students met the King and Queen of Green on Wednesday 18 May.

This show is a Shoalhaven Council initiative that teaches students about where to put different types of rubbish. The main event was a race between four students who made up the King’s team and four who made up the Queen’s team. The teams raced to put items of rubbish into the right bins.

Students learned songs that will remind them of the visit and encourage them to think about packaging, composting, reducing, reusing and recycling their waste.

Say No to Landfill (Sung to the tune of Click go the shears)

Choose nature's packaging when you buy

Build yourself a compost bin, your garden will thrive

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle we all can have a go

And when it comes to landfill we all have to say NO

The Compost Heap

Oh, the compost heap is a very fine heap

It eats all the fruit and veg I don’t wanna eat

Brother Russell’s Brussel sprouts

Sister Carol’s carrot stew Banana peels, celery stalks, lettuce turned to goo ewwww

Oh the compost heap is a very fine heap

It eats all the fruit and veg I don’t wanna eat

10 Merit Awards

This week, a number of students from primary received their 10 Merit Awards. These awards are given out three times a term in recognition of students who have returned 10 Merit Certificates to their teachers. Well done to all our students.

Chess Comp Update

Four secondary students competed in the second round of the annual Chess Tournament this week.

Rohan B, Harrison F, Harvey W and Micah P represented NCS in round one against local competition St Johns the Evangelist Catholic High School. This match, held in Term 1, saw NCS prevail as champions, landing us in the winner’s pool for round 2.

Whilst it was nice to play in person with St Johns hosting us in round 1, the second round saw Rohan, Harrison, Harvey and Micah logging on to their laptops for an online matchup against students from Bega High School. Bega’s team proved too strong on the day, knocking NCS out of the winner’s circle. But it’s not over yet! NCS will compete again in round 3, against another (yet-to-be-determined) school that also lost their round two match up. It won’t be easy as they will need a win in round 3 if they are to progress any further in the competition.

Thanks for representing our school in chess, boys, and good luck in round three!

NCS singing at the Eisteddfod

Last Thursday, both the Primary Choir and Secondary Vocal Ensemble competed in the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod. It has been two years since the Eisteddfod has been able to be held. So it was with an extra dose of anticipation and nerves that the students travelled to the Bomaderry Indoor Sports Centre to perform. Much to our delight and surprise, both Primary and Secondary groups won their section.  A special mention to our talented soloists in each group and our faithful accompanists Mrs Poulden for Primary Choir and Mr Harrison for Secondary Ensemble. We were pleased to be finally able to sing as a group and perform after the last two years.

We are grateful to the hard working Eisteddfod Committee for giving opportunity to students to perform. And a very big thankyou to family and friends who came along to support the students.

Senior Drama at Jervis Bay

On Wednesday, the Senior Drama class had the opportunity to view the exhibition at the Lady Denman museum of costumes from the Australian movie 'The Dressmaker'. The very welcoming staff at the museum set us up to watch a short documentary about the production aspects of the movie and then we enjoyed strolling around the small exhibit, appreciating the work that goes into the costuming in a production like this. There may have been added excitement for some over the fact that some of the costumes were for a character played by Liam Hemsworth. Enjoying lunch in Huskisson together finished off a lovely afternoon. We felt blessed that we could see such an exhibition locally.

Secondary Netball NSW Schools Cup

On Wednesday 28 May, we took two netball teams to the Shoalhaven Netball Courts to compete against other schools in the region for the Netball NSW Schools Cup.

The girls played their best against some very tough competition. Both teams had a few wins and losses throughout the day. The Year 9 girls team finished their pool in 2nd place which took them into the finals. Sadly, they did not progress further.

A number of our players were unable to make the gala day at the last minute so a special mention goes to Annie and Alyssa for coming along to play at short notice.

A huge thanks to Mrs Bristoe who has been sharing her expertise and training our teams in the lead up to this Gala Day. Cheyenne (alumni student), Charley and Charlotte were also a massive help umpiring at the event. It was a good day and a great learning experience for all. Hopefully, more practice will see NCS victorious next year.

A successful Secondary Expo

Thank you to the staff, parents/carers and students who attended the Secondary Expo last Tuesday evening. It was a wonderful night of fellowship and information as students heard from teachers about subjects on offer next year. The Stage 5 Drama class also presented a short excerpt of a play and music students provided background music. Thank you to the staff who made soups, slices and cakes for the delicious dinner and supper.
