Wise words with...

Jonathan W | Secondary Prefect

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Philippians 4:19-20

In the past two weeks, I have endured and enjoyed multitudes of great challenges and moments of joy, big and small. From working with fellow prefects on charitable projects, gaining a new teacher part way through a HSC course and even to being gifted a doughnut for my eighteenth birthday, God’s glory is revealed in many magnitudes of compassion.

This quality of practical kindness is known as compassion, God’s representation of the joyful giver. Since we are made in God’s image, we are also called to reflect His character in all we think and do. Appropriately so, in Fellowship In School Hours (FISH), we’re exploring the depth of God’s character by delving into the fruits of the spirit. The amazing thing is by giving to others for the glory of God, God’s spirit is working through us.

As a Year 12 student, I’ve seen compassion manifested in many different ways for all students. Seeing teachers and older students spending their lunchtimes to make younger students belong has been special. The weekly gaming club set up by Mr Petts and the Paper Plane Competition run by Beth W, our School Captain, are just some examples of efforts made to encourage students in their passions and interests. Every reminder that everyone has a chance to belong, further emphasises God meeting our needs through compassionate care.

In my responsibility as a prefect, I’ve witnessed compassion flow into many of our projects. Notably 'Colours for Compassion', which has been a primary focus of Community Events leaders, Eden R and myself. It will be an afternoon dedicated to raising money for Compassion Australia through a BBQ, activities and a fun run circuit where participants will be showered with colour. This event seeks to both aid the livelihood of families in poverty around the world and to benefit the wellbeing of our students. In both areas of impact, God’s truth will be witnessed to all involved.

It’s very easy to find being compassionate difficult. Because of this, we must remind each other and ourselves that only with God's help can we appropriately give glory to Him. Week in and week out, through whatever challenges we may face, it is crucial to remember that God is always compassionate and will meet all of our needs through Christ and His people. As a result, all glory goes to God! The life of the joyful giver is an awesome one.
