Year 6 News

Unit Of Inquiry

The Year 6 students completed the ‘Where We Are In Place and Time’ unit of inquiry last week. This term, we have been studying defining moments in Australia’s history and looking at ‘Who, What, Where, When, Why and How’ they occurred as well as the effect that these events have had on our nation.

The children independently researched a specific event of their choice, and then collaborated with peers to present a play to the Year 3 students. The plays were extremely creative, entertaining and most importantly, informative. The purpose of presenting their findings in this way was to help the Year 6 students consolidate their research by sharing their knowledge with an authentic audience.

We were very impressed with the creativity and confidence shown by all students. They brought costumes, wigs and props from home, created posters and used relevant PowerPoint backgrounds and even went to the extent of cleverly hiding their scripts so it wasn’t obvious that they were reading their lines… some taped their scripts to the back of posters and one student even tucked his inside a hat which he removed when it was his turn to speak!

The summative task for this unit was a written Information Report. The focus of this Learning Task was to draw on prior knowledge through our Trait Writing lessons. The students were required to organise and structure their findings in chronological order, highlighting important dates and the people involved.

Our next Unit of Inquiry is ‘How the World Works’ – stay tuned for more excellent work and exciting news from Year 6!
