"Be The Best That You Can Be"

Australian Mathematics Competition

What is it about?

The Australian Mathematics Competition is the largest single event on the Australian Education Calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in about 40 countries. It has become an international event, with countries throughout the Pacific and South-East Asia, and some from afield. The number of entrants in Australia alone has been in the order of 400,000. More details can be found at www.amt.edu.au/amcfact.html

Every year a significant number of students from our college enter this competition. While we have a number who achieve outstanding results, all students agree it is a very positive experience and well worth joining. In addition, students participating will enjoy a fantastic academic experience and HOUSE POINTS.

How do I get involved?

We are now calling for students to sign up and get involved.  The competition will be held between Wednesday 3th - Friday 5th August.

When do I have to register by? Friday 17th of June 2022

How do I register? Students need to sign up on Compass.

We encourage all students to participate, so get in early!

Community Connection Arts

The Project at WHSC

We are very proud to have our students representing Wheelers Hill Secondary College as part of the important work to recognise and celebrate our history of the First Nation of Australia, again.

The Community Connection Art class decided to make their connection with the local Elders Arbup Peters and Mark Lumley from DET 'Community Understanding and Safety Training' (CUST), to learn about the Indigenous culture and the land we are standing on.

This also involved building a clear understanding of the basic history of Indigenous Australia Culture and Customs specifically in the area of 'Arts', that is very central in their life and community interactions. Arts in its symbolic and cultural representation has been used as a means of communication by the Indigenous community of Australia for thousands of years. Their close and intimate connection to the land, flora and fauna are the core understanding the Year 9’s Community Connection Art students have learned. This newly acquired knowledge was expressed through the artworks they created.

Dreamtime - stories of legends, spirits, land and tribes are the main subject matter our Year 9 Community Connection students have focused on to represent Wheelers Hill Secondary College in the Corroboree Calling Exhibition organised by Monash Reconciliation Group and presented by The Track Gallery, City of Monash.

The Corroboree Calling Exhibition opens on Friday 20th May and the season will be running through to Sunday 29th May.

We look forward to seeing your support in attending the exhibition of our students' artworks.

In Term 3, two teams of students will represent WHSC at the Critical Thinking Summit at Scienceworks.

They will join student leaders from around Victoria at a whole-day summit to analyse the marketing tactics of industries that produce products that are harmful to health and wellbeing, including junk food; alcohol; and gambling. They’ll create digital responses to this issue and develop a counter-advertisement that will be presented in augmented reality (AR).

While students were supposed to participate in this event on the 13th of May, the impacts of covid resulted in the summit being postponed until term 3.

We look forward to seeing our students shine and wish them the best of luck (not that they’ll need it!).

AT WHSC, WE LOVE MATHS!

At the beginning of March, our Year 7 students had the opportunity to participate in the Mathematical Mindsets Show; a live show that helps students build a positive maths mindset, defeat maths anxiety, and develop their confidence in maths.

It was fantastic to witness their enthusiasm and involvement with the show. I expected my students to learn about resilience, grit, and curiosity, and they showed me that they learnt what I'd expected!

In addition, my students learnt about empathy, collaboration, and the power of caring. I enjoyed watching them learn by reflecting on their Maths mindsets and interacting with the performer during the show.

Now we are getting ready for our next Incursion and we are delighted to inform you that we will bring The Maths Show to WHSC on the 5th of May 2022 for our Years 7 and Year 8 students.

The Maths Show is a fun and entertaining live performance designed to boost student enjoyment of mathematics. The show combines humour and audience interaction with the extraordinary wonder and beauty of numbers to help students see maths from a different angle.

The Maths Show is full of mathematical history, magic, comedy, puzzles, and more–all designed to boost engagement with maths and promote problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. While the show's primary purpose is to entertain, the maths underpinning it is rigorous. The performance is highly interactive, with substantial audience involvement.

Bringing the production to the school is one of the many ways we seek to enhance and extend our NUMERACY program at WHSC.

Thanks for your ongoing support!

Together, we are changing paradigms and promoting a positive image of mathematics at WHSC!
