Debating News

On May 5th, our senior (Year 9-10) debating team went to Geelong Grammar to compete in an inter-school debating competition run by the Debaters Association Victoria (DAV). Our topic was “Should we boycott major sporting events in countries with poor human rights records”. As the affirmative team, we had to show profound support for this statement. Having two weeks to prepare for this topic our team: Tori, Gemma and I had to work together to gather research and structure convincing arguments and rebuttals to ensure that we were well-rounded. This included examining national and international policies related to sports boycotts, their connection with human rights, historical readings of the apartheid period in South Africa, and much more!

Our efforts were rewarded on the evening of the debate after we beat Mercy College. As a team, we are all very thankful for the support shown to us by the MFG community, especially Ms Harris who played a key role in guiding us through the complex idea of the debate; Ms Higginson whose optimistic energy was very motivating and moving on the debate night and our families who provided us with the confidence of mental support and affection. As a team, we are looking forward to what lies ahead in future debates, and on my own part, all I can say is that debating is exceedingly enjoyable! If anybody ever wants to join the parliament of our country then debating will certainly get you thinking politically and outside the box! Or otherwise, it is just an enriching experience that expands your intellectual boundaries and confidence. I am excited to see our progress this year as a team and thankful for MFG and Ms Harris to give us this excellent opportunity!
