Truganini Group

Our Truganini Group of ATSI students attended The Koorie Students Aspirations Day on Tuesday 5th April. This day inspired our Koorie students to have high aspirations, motivation, and was some exposure to a range of information/ service/ stalls to discuss post school opportunities for work and further education; to provide support in their future aspirations and decision-making. The Truganini Group had an awesome day being challenged and supported to believe in themselves, and think positively through differing mediums; guest speakers and extensive workshops. It was also a wonderful opportunity to network with Koorie students from other schools in the Barwon Region.

We had the opportunity to attend a number of workshops:

SHADES OF DEADLY – Clothing the Gaps challenges stereotypes and celebrate identity. We participated in discussions and learnt about their campaign that challenges stereotypes of First Nation people and celebrates the diversity in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and identity. It's not about judging each other by colour, or appearance. It's about connection to Community, culture, land and people.

ART WORKSHOP – We created a small canvas artwork using a combination of contemporary and traditional First Nations patterns. We looked over traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art styles. We had the choice of whether to paint Country or our own traditional country, or the country around you. Landscape, rivers, lakes, rocks, oceans and beaches. Or to choose to paint a Totem; a favourite animal, bird, or a special tree or plant.

HIP HOP SESSION – The motto was “no shame, be proud, respect”. We had so much fun with music and dance, and were encouraged to keep a strong mind, body, spirit and culture.
