Environmental Science Excursion

Saving the Eastern Barred Bandicoot from Extinction

Recently the U3&4 Environmental Science Students have been studying how management strategies are being used to save the Eastern Barred Bandicoot from extinction – they are currently extinct in the wild in Victoria.

At the beginning of this term the class participated in a field excursion to Mt Rothwell Conservation Centre where they could observe conservation strategies in place, collect primary data and then formulate their own recommendations for future conservation strategies. These images show them making bait balls, setting traps, collecting what was caught, collecting primary data and then releasing (all ethically).

Science Experiences during the term break.

Well done to the following ten students who chose to broaden their understanding of ‘science’ by attending a program at Melbourne University or at Queenscliff Marine Studies Centre during our rectent holidays:

Matilda Messer, Abegayle Richardson, Rameesha Aizaz, Molly Barrot, Zahra Ramazani, Thoorigai Murugan, Bonny Rawlins, Gen Nation-Jones and Daisy Bohun.

The Melbourne University program was over 3 days and some of the highlights for these students were the Physics Show (magic with physics), the Anatomy Museum (lots of real specimens), and the VR experience (where they had to diffuse a bomb under some very stressful circumstances where communication was key).

The one day program at Queenscliff included some amazing snorkelling at the pier and also a super interesting squid dissection.

As per usual, these students represented themselves and MFG proudly.

I would also like to congratulate these ten students on choosing to take advantage of such fabulous opportunities that are available – you never know what impact these types of experiences can have and where they may lead you.
