What's happening in the classroom??

5RF Writing Appraisals

5RF students learnt about writing appraisals. Students wrote appraisals of art works. Art works were created by professional artists that use their feet to hold the paint brush. Later students had a chance to try painting with their feet too. We discussed the idea that foot painting is tricky to do and God gives us all different talents.

Year 7 Slum Building

Late Term 2 our Year 7 Geography students were studying various cities and places people live around the world. One of the places that they were exploring was the megacity slums. They participated on an in-school excursion where they were provided materials and had to build their own slums in groups, giving them a brief experience of what it is like to live in slums under various simulated weather conditions...

KW Literacy Groups

Here we are working hard in our Literacy Groups.

1V Learning Procedures

1V had lots of fun learning to write procedures, although they have had more fun following the procedures to make yummy Milo milkshakes.

2B Learning Procedures

Fairy bread was on the menu in 2B. They followed the procedures well to finish with a very yummy snack!!

5RF Cooking Tasks

5RF actively engaged in a cooking task as part of their learning on 'text types'. The apricot balls were delicious.

5RF Visit from Mr Elith - Secondary Science Teacher

5RF invited Mr E to come and teach us about his double bass. It was a special treat to learn from a secondary school teacher and hear the lovely music. We asked interesting questions and demonstrated active listening skills. Thanks Mr Elith!!

5RF Celebrate Book Week early with  a 'book cafe'

5RF celebrated Book Week with a book cafe. Students entered a different learning environment where they were encouraged to order a book from the menu and enjoy the hospitality of the cafe owner, Miss Rose. This was an engaging learning opportunity where students actively participated in reading and sharing books with peers.

5RF ABC's Behind The News Classroom Connect

5RF has joined the ABC's Behind The News initiative, Classroom Connect. The program connects regional and city classrooms. We have been writing to our partner class in Gymea Bay. Today we had a Skype call with them. We are learning about the similarities and differences between our schools and had a chance to tell them why God is special in our school.

Year 9/10 Commerce

The last week of Term 2, Year 9/10 Commerce had the assessment task to become their own boss.  With the initiative from the '$20 Boss Program' where they were required to run their own business with the $20 start-up capital loaned from the Nab. There were many varied businesses and advertising popping up around the College. A great experience!

Secondary STEM @ TCC - Science

Year 10 are off and Racing!

This term Year 10 have been challenged to design a mousetrap car ready to race in the inaugural TCC Mousetrap Car Drag Race. Groups must adhere to strict rules in regards to materials and stick to a tight budget. An understanding of scientific and mathematical principles, willingness to evaluate and modify the design and expert construction skills will be an advantage.

Secondary STEM @ TCC - Maths

STEM-based Assessment Tasks

Year 7-10 have been engaged in STEM-based application tasks for Maths this term.

Year 7 have explored experimental and theoretical probability, trying to determine how closely they are related.

Year 8 have worked on real-life scenarios, calculating percentages and the amount of time taken by advertisements in a TV show.

Year 9 have been experimenting with ‘Barbie’ dolls, elastic bands and bungee jumps.  They have tested how many elastic bands are needed to enable Barbie to make a ‘safe’ bungee jump. Groups were limited in how many elastic bands they could use.

Year 10 have designed and built roller coasters so that the ride gives maximum thrills whilst still providing a safe ride. Groups were required to design and build their roller coaster with limited resources and waste.

Technology - Cows Create Careers

It's that time of the year when our Year 9 and 10 Agricultural Technology students embark on the Cows Create Careers program. The program is designed to promote dairy industry careers and education. Industry advocate Steven Brown recently visited to talk to the students and demonstrated the techniques involved in artificially inseminating a cow. Some students even got to have a go! The students are now working on their projects as well as helping to look after our two poddy calves, who are with us for the rest of the term.

Year 7 Rotation 2 Agriculture

In 7 Agriculture we have been blessed with a littler of 6 gorgeous mini-lop rabbits. When asked what our students liked about 7Ag, the students answered:

  • Playing with the rabbits (of course!)
  • Learning more things about animals that I didn’t know before
  • Being outside ( I am sure they mean cleaning the cages, feeding and watering the bunnies)
  • Having an opportunity to take a baby home

I agree, rabbit husbandry is the best part of my day at TCC too!

Mrs Wallis

Term 2 our Year 5 students went back in time...

Back to the Gold Rush era, where they came dressed 1850's style to work in with the unit they were studying.

Australian STEM Video Game Challenge

The Australian STEM Video Game Challenge is a national competition open to all Australian students in Years 5-12. This challenge represents a great opportunity for Taree Christian College students to engage in hands-on, inquiry-driven learning spanning the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in a fun, exciting and challenging way.

This year we entered 3 primary teams to work collaboratively in designing and building a working and playable original video game based on STEM in response to a core theme. The theme this year explores and addresses the theme of 'Reaction'.

Students that were nominated to participate in this challenge met all the requirements and have submitted their game to represent our school.

We are very proud of their efforts.
