Shape our Measurement

Our numeracy theme focus for the next few weeks is shape and measurement. Activities across our school will include students exploring and learning about 2D & 3D shapes, and drawing and constructing a variety of shapes including prisms & pyramids.

Did you know……

•             The form of something gives it its shape

•             Basic shapes include the square, the circle and the triangle

•             In geometry, a shape can be defined as the form of an object or its outline, outer boundary or outer surface

•             We can find different basic shapes such as the two-dimensional square, rectangle, and oval or the three-dimensional rectangular prism, cylinder, and sphere in the objects we see around us

•             If the shapes of two objects are the same or similar, they are said to be congruent to each other

Also, many jobs require the knowledge and skills of understanding shape and measurement. Careers involving shape and measurement include: Architect, Cartographer and Photogrammetrist, Drafter, Mechanical Engineer, Surveyor, Urban and Regional Planner.

Attached are some photos of our students constructing 3D mini shapes such as the cube, triangular prism, hexagonal prism and the hexagonal based pyramid.
