Year 7 and 8 Assistant Principal News

Linda Buckeridge

Although Term 3 has been a cold one, it has also been a busy one! Students have been working diligently on the commencement of their semester two subjects and enjoying the challenge of new electives.

Overall I am very proud of how the students have been managing themselves this term – enhancing their organisation and capacity to self-manage various issues with maturity and collaboration with peers/staff.

I was lucky enough to have Long Service Leave at the end of Term 2 and start of Term 3 and as part of this trip I visited a secondary school ‘Carson Graham’ in Vancouver, Canada. Carson Graham is in a school district of Vancouver that invested many years ago in a program called ‘Choices’ and Mrs Mandee Strickland went to view this last year. Her learning and recommendations resulted in CESC investing in our program titled ‘Connect 4 Success’, which is based on the Canadian program. It was fascinating to learn about the education system in Canada and how the ‘Choices’ program was created and continues to work.

We established Connect 4 Success (C4S) at the start of 2019 and once again the program is up and running this semester. Mr Harrison and Rana Davidson have been working hard to engage students from across both Year 7 and 8 in a variety of activities, focussing on social and emotional growth. I look forward to seeing the success these students will achieve with this small group, focussed approach. Having seen the long term success of the ‘Choices’ program in Canada, I am confident for similar and/or equal success here at CESC.

It has been terrific to see our Year 7 and Year 8 students conducting student-led year level assemblies. Seeing some of our students standing in front of their peers, talking into a microphone with confidence is very impressive. Congratulations to all Home Groups that have been a part of this so far and I look forward to the many more we have planned throughout the remainder of the year.

YEAR 7

It is fantastic to see the number of Year 7 students who are performing in this year’s whole school production of ‘We Will Rock You’. To see one of our Year 7s in a lead role is astounding and I wish each and every one of these students all the best with their upcoming performances. Don’t forget to grab your tickets – see Compass for details.

YEAR 8

The Year 8 students have been completing their course selection for 2020, which has enabled many students the opportunity to start considering where they might like to be in the future and when finishing school. I know that the Sports Pathways Program was extremely popular with interest expressed by many students and that interviews have taken place with the PE staff to ascertain student commitment to the program. It was great to see that many students were also interested in STEM as a pathway option – enhancing the profile of science and maths in particular here at CESC. Confirmation of course selection will occur next term.

Looking forward to a great end of Term 3.

Year 7’s putting their knife skills to work and making a fruit salad!

Year 7 News

At the end of last term, our Year 7 Student Leader, Layla Cerna ran our end of semester 1 assembly. During this assembly, many certificates for demonstrating Cranbourne East Secondary College’s values were awarded, celebrating everyone’s growth and achievement as well as attending school 100% of the semester. To separate the awarding of students we played a series of games where if someone found a different coloured sticky note under their chair they went up for a chance to win a canteen voucher. The whole cohort were congratulated on their efforts within the first two terms of high school. The assembly was concluded with an eager applaud and cheer from everyone.

Year 8 News

Dear Year 8 Parents/Guardians and Students,

It has been a busy start for Year 8 students in Term 3.

Firstly, we congratulate our Year 8 students involved in Intermediate Girls’ Football. The girls were competitive at regional competition and represented the school very well. As too our boys who also competed in regional Year 8 Competition. Well done to both teams on reaching this level.

As you are more than likely aware subject selections should have been handed in by now. Interviews for some of these subject options have already taken place. We wish our students all the best in perusing their chosen study path.

In recent weeks, students in mandarin have been engaged in a chopstick challenge. As the picture below illustrates, students have found this quite challenging and have enjoyed this part of the curriculum.

Lastly, we would like to thank Beth Batchelor, our former Year 8 leader, who decided to step down from the position at the end of last term. She has been replaced by Paul Hill. We thank Beth for her awesome work with our Year 8 Cohort and wish her all the success in her new role.

Kind regards,

Rob Horwill

Year 8 Assistant Leader

Athletics Carnival

On the 13th of August the whole school walked down to Casey Fields to participate in the 2019 annual Athletics Carnival. There was a range of events that students had the opportunity to partake in. These include all different lengths of running, shot put, discus, javelin, long jump and triple jump. Unfortunately, the weather conditions weren’t the greatest and that stopped us from doing high jump; however, it was great to see everyone come in their house colours and show some support.
