National Civics and Citizenship Convention

On the 27th of October I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the National Civics and Citizenship Convention. Overlooking Parliament House, the 11 other students selected to represent South Australia and I connected with students across Australia to discuss the main topic “Should Australia Have Compulsory Voting?”. We heard from multiple distinguished professors such as Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO, Emeritus Professor Judith Brett, Professor Christine Wallace, and Professor Mark Evans. We were able to ask thought provoking questions and discuss and debate different opinions. It was awesome being able to present our findings to the President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Sue Lines. Overall it was an amazing day and it was fantastic to meet and work with so many likeminded students from across the state.

Premiers Anzac Spirit School Prize Competition

In exciting news, two Loreto Students have won the 2022 Premiers Anzac Spirit School Prize Competition. Emma Choi (Year 9) and Alexandra Seal (Year 9) will be acknowledged at an official ceremony attended by the South Australian Premier Mr Malinauskas on Monday 21st November. The competition is open to all South Australian Students currently enrolled in Years 9 and 10 and it attracts large numbers of entries each year. The Prize-Winning Students also participate in an interstate or overseas commemorative study tour.

Each year the competition asks students to research South Australian servicemen and servicewomen who served during the 20th Century world conflicts. Emma conducted her research on Lieutenant Colonel Henry Simpson Newland who was a leading Medical Surgeon in the Australian Army in World War One. Treating the injured from both the Gallipoli and Western Front theatres of war, Newland pioneered ground-breaking procedures in the field of plastic surgery. Alexandra researched Corporal Hurtle Samuel Walker, from Peterborough, South Australia, who served in the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli and the Western Front. Additionally, Walker also survived 18 months as a prisoner of War.

Emma and Alexandra’s entries were of an exceptional standard due to their extensive use of primary and secondary sources. In each case, the final entry was impressive not only for the depth of research, but the thoughtful manner with which Emma and Alexandra expressed their understanding of commemoration and its legacy for young Australians in the 21st century. Congratulations Emma and Alexandra on this terrific achievement.

Year 11 Nutrition

The Year 11 Nutrition class had an incursion with the company Circle Harvest/Edible Bug Co last week.

This incursion complemented their learning on Future Foods and what it means to start forward thinking about our future with a growing population, less arable lands, and the potential of less resources like water and energy. The students proposed ideas about their own sustainable future foods company, with logo, and product development, as well as marketing.

The students also got to try donut flavoured meal worms, BBQ flavoured crickets and BBQ flavoured cricket corn chips - which were a huge hit!

Senior Musical - Seussical the Musical

Loreto is excited to present the 2022 Senior Musical, Seussical the Musical. The girls have been working extra hard since the beginning of Term 3 to bring this awesome show to the PAC Theatre stage.

In this fascinating musical journey, Dr Seuss helps us all to believe in the value and dignity of others and in the pure power of the imagination, and this is at the very heart of the show.

Come along and listen to a great story, hear some awesome music, see some cool choreography and of course, support our girls.

Discontinuation of Music Lessons

Please note that the policy at Loreto College is for parents to provide at least four weeks’ notice before the end of term in order to discontinue instrumental music tuition. However, due to the lesser number of weeks in Term 4 and the longer holiday break, we have extended the deadline for this notice to be given. The process is carried out by filling in a Discontinuation of Lessons form. If sufficient notice has not been given, tutors will charge for the next term’s fees.

Please ensure these forms are in by Friday 25 November.
