Religious Education News

Andrew May  -  Religious Education Coordinator

The Gospel for this week’s College Mass contained the parable of the three talents. A lord left three servants with money to invest whilst he went on a long journey. When he returned, he asked the servants for an account of how they had invested the money. Two servants had invested the money wisely and increased the lord’s money. He rewarded them for this. The third servant had done nothing with the money, and in return was punished by the lord. One of the morals of the parable is that we are gifted with talents that we should use to the betterment of others and ourselves. If we don’t use these talents, our world (and us) suffers.

The last two weeks have been busy ones for O’Connor students and staff. Last week we celebrated Catholic Missions, raising awareness of the good work of the Church in Ethiopia as well as much needed money that goes towards grass-roots development to benefit the neediest in that country. A whole-school liturgy was celebrated on Friday at which Mrs Jacqui Toakley, representing Catholic Missions, spoke.

CATHOLIC MISSIONS LITURGY: The College participated in a beautiful Liturgy on Monday.

This week we have observed NAIDOC, and the school community has been involved in a range of activities building solidarity with our First Australians including a liturgy and flag raising on Monday morning.

RECOGNITION AND RESPECT: Monday morning's liturgy and flag raising.

FUNDRAISING FUN: It doesn't get bigger than a big handball game!

Concurrently, Year 10 students have continued to support the Special Religious Education classes in Martins Gully and Ben Venue Primary Schools, and this week many of them have nominated for positions as Lasallian Youth Leaders for 2023.

All of these events and activities reinforce the reality that we all have gifts and talents and are called upon to utilise these to the best of our abilities. It is through these events, and others, that we are constantly reminded of the Catholic values of our school community.

With such a difficult year and a half it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church is closed as it is at present. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
