Methane Bubbles experiment
As a part of the 'Properties of Substance' unit, 7N students had the opportunity to participate in the Methane Bubbles experiment. After a long stint on remote learning, they were excited to participate in experiments again. Although it looks dangerous, the students made sure to create a barrier between the flames and their skin using water.
Density Towers
Olivia and Emma (7G) were making Harry Potter Potions Density Towers with different potions such as Dragons blood (really a type of oil) to see which was the most dense. It also created a very pretty column of different colours.
Spiny Leaf Stick Insects
In our Nerran building we are lucky to have some spiny leaf stick insects. They look scary to some people but they are actually gentle giants. The students have been happy to see how much they have grown over lockdown. Spiny leaf insects (Extatosoma toaratum) are native to Northern New South Wales and Queensland but live happily inside in Victoria. They are herbivores so just need gum leaves or wattle leaves and a misting of water to survive.
With each moulting they become larger until they are almost the length of your hand. The females are large and heavy whereas the males are lighter and have wings on their final moult. They are slow moving and sway as they walk which helps them pass off as a leaf in the breeze to avoid predators.
Our Spiny leaf stick insects are very popular with the students and often get a caring mist of water as students pass by and sometimes a little hold.
Our Year 9 Biological Systems class students get to study them and even adopt them if they wish.
Solids and Liquids
Students in 7G Science explored the properties of solids and liquids and made edible slime out of gummy bears, cornflour and icing sugar to discuss if such a substance had properties more like a solid or more like a liquid. They enjoyed stretching and moulding it and particularly tasting it!
Ms Radford is one of our Year 7 Coordinators. She also teaches Year 11 Chemistry, Year 9 and 10 Physics and Year 7 and 8 Pastoral.
Ms Radford received a gift from one of our Year 12 students on their last day, a student she hadn't actually taught, but who appreciated all the support and encouragement she had received from Ms Radford over the years.
