Mr Luke McMahon

Prayers

We pray for all in our community who are sick or suffering.

We pray for those called home to heaven especially:

  • Colin Edward Stickley
  • Pauline Kidd

We pray for our country and our world still living in this pandemic and we remember the many who have suffered and are suffering through COVID-19.

May our loving God, with Mary and Champagnat, walk with all members of the Marist family. Amen

COP26 - 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference

Conference of the Parties COP26

The term “COP” stands for the “Conference Of the Parties”, an annual meeting on climate change organised by the United Nations and attended by delegations from most countries around the world. The COP is hosted by a different country each year and involves detailed negotiation between countries about how the world is going to address climate change and what action each country is going to take.

COP26 is the 26th such meeting and it will take place in Glasgow, United Kingdom, from 31 October until 12 November 2021.

COP26 is a very important milestone for climate change negotiations as it comes five years after the signing of the “Paris Agreement”. The Paris Agreement committed every country to take action, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to ensure that the world’s average temperature rise can be kept to below 1.5-degree C. COP26 and Pope Francis

COP26 is so important that Pope Francis himself has committed to sending a delegate from the Vatican to the climate summit in person.

In Pope Francis’ words: “Doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain. We may well be leaving to coming generations debris, desolation and filth. The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity that our contemporary lifestyle, unsustainable as it is, can only precipitate catastrophes, such as those which even now periodically occur in different areas of the world.”

BUT also from Pope Francis: “Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home.”

On 8 September 2021, the world’s three main Christian leaders issued an unprecedented joint appeal to members of their Churches to “listen to the Cry of Earth” and back action to stem the effects of climate change. In “A Joint Message for the Protection of Creation”, Pope Francis, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew asked Christians to pray that world leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow in November make courageous choices. In Australia, the recently released Bishops’ Social Justice Statement 2021–22: Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, affirms that “we human beings need a change of heart, mind and behaviour”.

The Social Justice Statement 2021-22 provides theological foundations to inspire efforts to care for creations while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged and excluded.

In the Statement, the Bishops invite the Catholic community to join them in taking up Pope Francis’ invitation to a 7-year journey towers total ecological sustainability, guided by seven Laudato Si’ Goals. These Goals are: response to the cry of the poor; ecological education; and community engagement and participatory action.
