College Principal's Report

Last 12 Months
Leadership Team
The past week I have reflected on the last twelve months. I commenced at the College at the start of term four last year and as I look back I am so proud of what the College has achieved in such a short time. This has not occurred without the strong commitment and support of my leadership team College Council, staff, parents and students.
I would be remiss if I did not single out one parent member of our College Mr Greg Bensch, a single parent of two students two weeks ago received a Community Award presented by Alan Tudge our local Federal member at the Ashton Awards Ceremony. Greg is a quiet achiever who was nominated for the work he has put in as a parent volunteer at the College and for the community via chaplaincy committee. Greg is an active member of our College Council and participates in every subcommittee. He gives up his time to volunteer in second hand book sales, parent focus groups, working bees, spring market each year and so much more. I congratulate Greg for his award on behalf of the College.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Scoresby Secondary College students have had so many choices to engage extracurricular activities to complement and add balance to our rigorous teaching and learning program. The past month some examples include: inter-school sports and district athletics, multiple excursions, chaplaincy spring market, production, student performances at State Schools Spectacular, pre drivers education and so many other activities . I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our teaching and non-teaching staff for their commitment to offering and preparing for these activities for our students.
Production
One of the parts of my role I really enjoy is seeing students gain so much out of demonstrating their skill sets across a range of areas. This year’s Production Sgt Peppers was no exception. We have some very talented students and an exceptional music and performance team who led the production from the start until the final show. Congratulations to our Performing Arts Coordinator Tony King who led a team of staff and volunteers to produce a first class event. I have received many letters and emails from people who attended the evening who agree with my sentiments.
Comments included:
‘It was well presented and the kids were great’
“ this is the fist production I have attended being a new parent to the College and was blown away by the quality of the singers, digital technology, music and dancers”
“As a member of the older generation I found myself reminiscing on my teenage years and bopping along in sync with the performers”
Parent Engagement
Thank you to parents who have engaged in our information evenings and parent/student teacher conferences this term. We hope that we have been able to keep you informed of how your children are progressing in their learning and opened up the communication channels at home so we are providing consistent messages for our students.
Naplan
Results
Naplan results came out recently. We have seen a growth in our student learning and this was evident in the results where we have shown gains in the students writing results between years 7 and 9. Writing underpins achievement in almost every subject and is a key employability and life skills. Further details on our achievements will be provided next term.
I wish all of our students, staff and families all the best for the school holidays. For those who will be working throughout the break, I thank you for putting in the hard work for our students. Some of our teaching staff are conducting revision sessions for Year 12 students; our facilities staff will be extremely busy carrying out work to further improve the environment; and many more staff will be preparing lessons for Term 4.
Gail Major
Principal
Community Service Certificate
The Honorable Alan Tudge, MP, the Federal Member for Aston, presenting Greg Bensch his certificate for Community Service (Senior Volunteers).
On Friday 4 September I had much pleasure to attend the ‘Aston Community Awards 2015’, at the Italian Club Rowville. I was accompanied by our School Council Committee President Mr Keith Talty and his wife Kerry. I was nominated by our Principal, Gail Major.
I can assure you I was most humble and proud, to be in the company of the 70 shortlisted finalists, who were most deserving nominees, whom have contributed their services with notable merit, through the Shire of Knox.
Over the past 40 years I have had involvement in numerous Primary and Secondary School Committees, coaching football, cricket and athletic teams, along with a variety of Community Service Clubs.
To receive the ‘Aston Community Award’ nomination has been the highlight of my endeavours.
I recommend to you, that if you have the time and interest in anyway to contribute your best abilities, to a service in the community, that you do so.
Once again I wish to thank Gail Major and the Scoresby Secondary College Community for the nomination.
Yours most sincerely
Greg Bensch
School Council and Chaplaincy Committee Member
