VCAL VIBES

Julie Elkin
VCAL Coordinator
VCAL and EAL VCAL students have been busy this term with various projects. It was fantastic to see some of the VCAL students at Pako Festa either walking in the parade with our school or with their own cultural group (and then coming back to the NGSC group) or joining in the many fun things to do on the day.
Mainstream students served delicious pancakes to raise some money for Uniting Care - a charity that support students at our school with books and uniforms.
Pink Stumps Day was another successful venture - once again supporting a charity that benefits others. Money raised goes to the provision of breast care nurses for those suffering from breast cancer. The students sold many 'pink' things on the day and hosted a staff versus student cricket match, complete with pink stumps, pads and wicket keepiing gloves.
EAL VCAL hosted Bellariine Secondary College for Chinese New year celebrations. Paper mache lanterns and chains of red decorated the space; a dragon paraded and students sampled fortune cookies, sharing the predictions for the coming Year of the Monkey. A catering crew prepared a delicious lunch of fried rice which was enjoyed by all. The Bellarine students left accompanied by a display of sparklers (instead of firecrackers!).
Some students prepared pot plants of purple and white violas and/or purple or white lobelia. These colours, along with the green foliage, represented the colours of International Women's Day. The students also provided an explanation of the significance of the colours on a sign that was placed in the pots. These pots were hen used as centrepieces for the Soroptimist IWD breakfast on Tuesday March 8th. Our College Captains and the two Soroptimist scholarship holders attended this breakfast along with Mrs Cox and Mrs McGrath.
EAL VCAL students also made the tissue paper flowers (for which we are famous!) for this breakfast and all the guests.
Bellarine Secondary College hosted NGSC EAL VCAL students for a Surfing and Tourism Industry Experience. Students had a great time mastering the waves at Ocean Grove on a rather dull day, and also learnt about opportunities in the tourism area on the Bellarine Penensula. Obsiously all the paddling to catch waves and the walk along the river was too much for many of the students as they slept most of the way back to Geelong!
Three EAL VCAL students (Pa Neh Say, Jlamuti and Kamal) gave a presentation entitles 'This is My Life' at Christ Church Geelong on Saturday 5th March. They spoke in front of approximately 35 people and they did a great job, representing the College and themselves in a very professional manner. They shared supper aiwth the people afterwards and took part in conversation with the guests.

Recently the EAL VCAl class went to Melb to view the Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei Exhition. The following statements are by the students who attended the excursion.
Today we went to the Art Gallery in Melbourne. We went and looked at Ai Weiwei and Andy it was so much fun seeing the beautiful drawings, photos and videos. I was too excited seeing the beautiful stuff that I forgot to fill out the work sheet….. we made art out of a coffee cup it was so much fun because we had to draw a picture and I really enjoyed this moment.

On Thursday I went on an excursion to the NGV my classmates went to the north Geelong rail station. I went to the Geelong R.S. I was worried. I caught a bus to the right station and went to Southern Cross station with my classmates. I saw the Campbells Soup Cans, Lego, Chandaler flowers and photo booth.

The Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei Exhibition. This place I already went a few times but Andy’s work is not the same and Ai Weiwei likes making different art. I liked the bicycles, and the flowers. I loved taking the photos in the photo booth and playing the cat game.
Pa Neh
Today was great. It was good seeing Ai Weiwei and listen to the lady telling the story of the artist. I knew the meaning of some of it.

One of the things I liked was the Rosie Batty, the security camera, and the wallpaper. The lego room and short film on the sunflower installation. The thing I like the most was art drawing with pencil. It’s beautiful to do that.
Pha Day Htoo
I liked Ai Weiwei’s clever cats and the cat picture I made myself.

Today, what a wonderful day it was….. there was a small model of how his life in prison was. It showed how he was eating, where he was sleeping and how he was being watched everywhere he went. Even in the toilet and in the shower. It is not normal for humans to be watched everywhere and doing everything………..Everything in that room was of cats. They were even on the photo booth.
Alphonse Mulashe
We went to the photo booth there were some good photos and I sent them to our emails. In the presentation I truly understood what the woman was talking about. ……… We didn’t have time to eat lunch that was bad because I was dying but I am a man so I had to be strong. We then did workshop we made some cool cups. I was thinking we were going to have a coffee but I was wrong. My day was good.
