Year 7

Study Skills Evening

On Thursday 23 April we hosted over 300 Parents and students for our Year 7 Study Skills Evening.

The event was presented by Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learing Educational Specialists and provided some valuable hints for students and parents.

For those of you who were unable to attend the evening please free to access the information presented on the evening in the attachments below.

Reptile Encounters

Last week, each of the Year 7 Science classes welcomed REPTILE ENCOUNTERS to the college.

All homerooms were involved in a wildlife presentation and had the opportunity to meet ‘Crunchy’ the crocodile, ‘Tiny’ the python and many other interesting animals.

The incursion was based around a recent unit of work on animal classification which has been completed in science classes.

Debating

The Year 7 debaters have begun their DAV competition campaign with infectious enthusiasm, lots of raw talent and beautiful big smiles!

DAV Squad members for 2015 are: Liam Collins, Flynn Morley, Elijah Barrett (SBC 5) and Jack Pooley, William Devlin, Jacob Barry and Xavier Muncey (SBC 6).

They have competed in two rounds of debates so far and have had enriching experiences as budding debaters, pitting their matter, manners and team method against students from other Bayside Colleges from years 7-9.

DAV set the topics to reflect current social issues; so far the boys have had to grapple with issues like magazines using photo editing and the validity of celebrating Australia DAY. The next topic on the agenda is: “whether or not we should get rid of State governments”

SBC 5 have won both of their debates, and SBC 6 has come close twice, gaining valuable experiences each time.

Skills such as public speaking, media research and awareness of current social issues, team collaboration, speech writing and execution are just some of the benefits of this extra-curricular extension activity.

Junior House Debating will be launched next semester to give more boys an opportunity to get involved.

ACC Sport

During Term 2, Year 7 teams are involved in ACC Football and Soccer.

Our football teams are being coached by Mr Egan and Mr Blackall.

Mr Micallef is in charge of the soccer squad and is assisted by former student Zane Fernandes.

The standard of competition has been extremely high and all participants have approached  games with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

At present our Football A and Soccer teams are undefeated and working towards securing a spot in the finals.

Good luck to everyone involved for the rest of the season.
