DEBATERS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA SCHOOLS COMPETITION
The debating squad from our Mentone Campus represented St Bede's College during Round 5 of this competition in the Brighton Region. Students have completed five separate debates throughout Semester 1, with the teams on top of the ladder at each grade progressing to finals.
This has been a wonderful learning opportunity for all those involved, and each student should be commended for their efforts - whether they experienced success or developed resilience despite setbacks - all contributions to the squad are valuable and appreciated.
B Grade (Year 11)
Team - Rory Tuke, Massimo Scarpa and Liam Casey
This team prepared a secret topic that was released an hour before their debate, ‘That all businesses should go cashless by 2025.’ The team was defeated by a single point in its debate against Brighton Secondary Team 3.
C Grade (Year 10)
Team 1 - Harrison McCawley, Tomas Polintan, John Carino and Oliver Bradley
This team won their debate on the topic ‘That medical professionals should not be allowed to strike.’ This brilliant effort resulted in a clear win against St Leonard's by 3 points. Congratulations to Tomas for being named Best Speaker in this event.
This team has finished the five rounds of the competition tied at the top of the ladder, we look forward to passing on news about their progression to finals! t
Team 2 - Ben Hall, Jack Weavers, Piero Palleschi and Oliver Kujawski
This team did not compete in Round 5 due to a scheduled bye , completing their competition with more experience and feedback to take away for next season.
Team 3 - James Moore, Thomas Liang, George Sakkas and Michael Robertson
This team has made enormous improvement in their debating practice this year – a commendable effort in their debut season. They were defeated by a mere point in their debate against Firbank!
D grade (Year 8 & 9)
Team 3 – Rohahn Marie-Jeanne, Matthew Donnelly, Lachlan Dooley
On the topic of ‘We regret the use of participation awards,’ this team won its closely contested debate by one point. Special mention to Rohahn who was named Best Speaker in this debate.
Team 1 - Caiden McGaw, Ignacio Quiroz-Mendes, Mitchell Bryant, Thomas McDonnell and Jesse Belle
Team 2 - William Aufner, George Tindale and Jacob Murphy
These two teams were drawn to compete against each other in Round 5. This debate has been postponed and will be conducted onsite at Mentone Campus early in Term 3.
We thank the excellent mentors that have supported these teams throughout the competition, giving generously of their time and expertise by coming to various night events as well as working with students to prepare during school time.
FOOTBALL
Two of our Year 9 students, Max Matthews and Jack Surkitt, were selected to represent Victoria in the upcoming Under 15 Australian Football Championships to be held in Ballarat, VIC from Saturday 22 – Saturday 29 July 2023.
To be selected in this team from all the Under 15s across Victoria is a fantastic effort.
We wish them the best of luck in this tournament.
NETBALL FRIENDLY
ST BEDE'S & KILBREDA COLLEGE
Our Year 12s hosted a friendly but very fierce game of netball between Kilbreda College on June 7. Both teams played exceptionally well, with a final score of 20 (Kilbreda) to 22 (St Bede's). We even had a cameo from our very own Coach Frizza!
The Apprentice is a Year 9 business venture program at Bentleigh East Campus, where each student rotates through a series of alternative learning experiences. Hear from the student team themselves!
"Some of these experiences take us outside of school (The City Project), some outside our comfort zone, while others challenge us in ways that aren’t possible in the classroom!
We undertook the challenge of creating our own café, Dessert Drills Café.
Ours was based on the concept of sweets and desserts. Our aim was to make a healthy profit and that's exactly what we achieved.
Along the way, we faced challenges of meeting tight deadlines, creating an appealing menu, designing the café space, advertising, working together and the usual business stuff.
On Friday 19 May, we had the pleasure of officially opening Dessert Drills Café, with our guest of honour, Ms Frizza who opened the café in an official ribbon cutting ceremony - an honour we were all very privileged to be part of."
THANK YOU
All these accomplishments are made possible not just due to the dedication and effort of each student, but also because of the support they receive from their family, friends and College community.
Thank you to all the Parents, Carers and College staff who help our students achieve their personal best.
