Mazenod Basketball

On Saturday 17 June the Mazenod Old Boys took on the students from the Mazenod Junior Basketball Club in a round robin. This event is held in memory of Mitchell Delle Coste, who sadly passed away in 2018. This event was widely looked forward to after a hiatus for a number of years due to Covid. There was a large crowd of parents, students and old boys present.

It was a fantastic event, packed with impressive finishes, 3-pointers and dunks (and many bricks) that saw the Mazenod Old Boy teams winning all three games. In the final game the monstrously-sized Old Boys took a commanding 15 point lead, before the MJBC team brought the lead down to just 6 with 2 minutes left. A number of steals by Taj Ingleton (Class of 2022) helped the Old Boys secure the win and won him the Mitchelle Delle Coste MVP trophy.

Congratulations to Michael O (Yr 11) for taking out the student MVP, closely followed by big-man Deegan C (Yr 10). Thank you to Danny and Kym for joining us and presenting the trophy in Mitchell’s name.

Thanks also to the Old Boys and MJBC for organising the event, particularly Mr Chris Mason, Mr Brett Scarey (MJBC President) Mr Matthew Alexander and Mr John Keogh (MOB President).

Footy Tipping

The Bye rounds ended relatively tamely with the Thursday and Friday night games causing the most thought for tipsters. We had 11 people who got all six games correct and a further 36 who picked five winners for the week. Of those that picked six, Damian Allan (Class of 1983) and Shane Porter were both two points off the margin in Geelong’s win over Melbourne and as such will receive $25 each.

With regards to the overall leader board, Brady Rafferty (Class of 2021) leads on 90, Adrian Pensini (Class of 1987) sits second on 89 and there are two people on 88.

Round 16

Brisbane v Richmond

Richmond has won its last three games and is certainly back in the hunt for a spot in the eight but it’s always hard to tip against Brisbane when they are at home;

Sydney v Geelong

Playing at the SCG holds no fears for Geelong and despite winning by 171 points last week Sydney will need to lift their game to beat Geelong;

Adelaide v North Melbourne

No reason not to pick Adelaide at home;

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle

A tough game to pick especially in light of the fact that Fremantle has won four of the last six games played between these sides at Marvel Stadium;

Gold Coast v Collingwood

Gold Coast are always more competitive at home but you would be brave to pick them to beat Collingwood;

Essendon v Port Adelaide

These two sides last met at the MCG in 1998!! Port were in great form before the bye, will they continue their 11 game winning streak?

Hawthorn v Carlton

If Carlton are any chance of making the eight they must win this game (plus most of the other games they have left this year);

Melbourne v GWS

This game is being played in Darwin, not that I imagine that will necessarily sway people’s thinking on who will win this game; and

West Coast v St Kilda

After a couple of disappointing losses St Kilda get the ideal fixture to help get their season back on track.

Good luck and thanks for the support!
