Mazenod Junior Basketball Club

Mazenod Basketball

On Saturday 17 June the Mazenod Old Boys took on the students from the Mazenod Junior Basketball Club in a round robin. This event is held in memory of Mitchell Delle Coste, who sadly passed away in 2018. This event was widely looked forward to after a hiatus for a number of years due to Covid. There was a large crowd of parents, students and old boys present.

It was a fantastic event, packed with impressive finishes, 3-pointers and dunks (and many bricks) that saw the Mazenod Old Boy teams winning all three games. In the final game the monstrously-sized Old Boys took a commanding 15 point lead, before the MJBC team brought the lead down to just 6 with 2 minutes left. A number of steals by Taj Ingleton (Class of 2022) helped the Old Boys secure the win and won him the Mitchelle Delle Coste MVP trophy.

Congratulations to Michael O (Yr 11) for taking out the student MVP, closely followed by big-man Deegan C (Yr 10). Thank you to Danny and Kym for joining us and presenting the trophy in Mitchell’s name.

Thanks also to the Old Boys and MJBC for organising the event, particularly Mr Chris Mason, Mr Brett Scarey (MJBC President) Mr Matthew Alexander and Mr John Keogh (MOB President).

JOE COOK-GREEN – EASTERN SUNS and JO JO HOOPS BASKETBALL PROGRAM

The past few weeks saw 20 MJBC players rise with the sun to undertake a three week training session with Joe Cook-Green from Eastern Suns and JoJo Hoops.

This program started on Monday 12th June and finished this week. The boys learnt and practised all types of basketball techniques and drills.

This was MJBC's first training program since Covid and we are looking at holding more throughout the remainder of the year so all MJBC players will get an opportunity to take part.

MJBC Committee

The committee is calling out for volunteers. The committee’s existence heavily relies on parent volunteers with the same mindset of providing our sons with the opportunity to, not only participate in sport, but also engage in healthy behaviours and friendships. This is also an opportunity for parents to experience the same by connecting with other parents.

Sadly as the club continues to grow and develop, the workload is increasingly difficult to manage with such a small group of volunteers. The committee is made up of parents who are also full time/part time workers with families. It had come to the point that without more support, the committee may be forced to reduce the number of teams put forward for season 2 for the KDBA competition. Ideally this is not what we want to happen but it is the direction this is heading.
