School Holiday Group Success at Toowong

On the second week of the school holidays, ESA Toowong, led by Occupational Therapist Maddie Baldwin, ran a sensory group for younger children (aged 3-5).

This group was developed to support families of children who experience challenges completing self-care tasks, in particular feeding difficulties due to sensory sensitivity.

Across three days, participants explored a range of tactile sensations through messy play as part of a small group. This group provided children with limited verbal communication an opportunity to socialise and collaborate in play, problem solving and exploring various sensations at a safe and comfortable pace. Parents of the group were also able to meet with each other to discuss shared experiences.

By the end of the group, all participants had engaged both with each other, and with a variety of messy play activities. They had an opportunity to touch, mix, squish, pour, throw, explore and model during play with their peers.
