Junior School, South Plympton

Give a little kindness

As a Junior School, we have been looking at people of faith whom we can model our lives after. We’ve heard about Ruth and her faithfulness, William Wilberforce and his fight against injustice and, on Monday, we heard from Mrs Dragun about Corrie Ten Boom who was a daughter of a watchmaker who sheltered Jews during the German occupation of the Netherlands.

She showed bravery and an unwavering faith in God, but most of all she showed a Godly kindness towards the Jewish people and her fellow prison mates. Corrie Ten Boom is only one example of the simple acts of kindness we can show to those around us.

Jesus also showed kindness when he healed the sick, fed the hungry and taught the people about his loving Father in heaven. He cared for a widow in need and even defended the young children. Jesus’ whole life was lived with perfect kindness. Jesus is not asking any more of us than what he lovingly did himself.

In our classes this year, we have been encouraging a culture of kindness. We want our students to share kindness and love to their fellow peers.

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)

Small acts of kindness make our school a happier place for everyone. They boost the feelings of students who might not have confidence, help some maintain a level of control, and encourage whole-class happiness and optimism. It may also encourage others to repeat the kindness that they have experienced themselves - contributing to a more positive classroom community.

As a school, we are encouraging children to use words of kindness every day. It reminds me of Proverbs 15:1 (NIV) - "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." We are seeing this Proverb daily in the lives of our students. Words of kindness, love and encouragement always are rewarded with a gentle answer, whereas harsh and unkind words are always rewarded with resentment and displeasure.

As we continue to mould and teach the students in our care we are always hopeful that kindness prevails over anger. That their acts of kindness would help build a school that shines the love and light of God. Please continue to pray for the students in our care that those acts of kindness would change their hearts and build a stronger, loving, Emmaus Community.

National Walk Safely To School Day

On Friday 26 May, Junior School students from both campuses have the opportunity to participate in National Walk Safely To School Day.

The objectives of WSTSD are:

  • To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school aged children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
  • To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adults hand when crossing the road.
  • To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
  • To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an e arly age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
  • To promote the use of Public Transport.
  • To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
  • To reduce the level of traffic congestion.

You would have received an Expression of Interest Form via Student Services with the full details of our walk from the respective sites. If you are keen for your children to be involved, please fill out the form by Monday 22 May so that we can ensure correct adult:student ratios for the walk.

Parents are encouraged to walk with their children if they have a Working With Children Check. Teachers will be walking on the day to reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. All adults involved in the walk are invited to stay for a coffee and catch up once students have entered their classrooms.
