Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition

In Week 1, 39 Year 5 to Year 10 students from both campuses took part in the hour-long Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition, by the Australian Mathematics Trust.

The CAT competition is unique. It aims to inspire, extend, and recognize mathematical understanding for primary and secondary students by focusing on the development of problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking.

The results will be announced in June.

Rostrum Public Speaking Competition - Voice of Youth

Five Emmaus Christian College students were prepared to accept the public speaking challenge of the Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition.

The girls, ranging from Year 7 to Year 12, have been meeting weekly since Week 2 of Term 1 to prepare their 6-minute (Middle School) or 8-minute (Senior School) speeches. On Saturday, they competed against students from schools across South Australia. The competition was in two parts; the first was a prepared speech on a given topic, and then they had 15 minutes to prepare a 3-minute Short Notice speech for the second part.

The competition was of an extremely high standard. Our students spoke with courage, their speeches were logical, entertaining, and respectful.

Well done to:

  • Kaylin (Year 7) - her 6-minute speech was on "Behind the Lens"
  • Jamie (Year 7) - her 6-minute speech was on "Behind the Lens"
  • Mariam (Year 8) - her 6-minute speech was on "A Change Worth Making"
  • Stella (Year 9) - her 6-minute speech was on "Harmony"
  • Sohana (Year 12) - her 6-minute speech was on "Voice to the Voiceless"

Thank you to their peers, parents and siblings who came along to support them.

Debating SA

We have nine Debating teams with over 50 students across both campuses from Year 5 to Year 10 participating in the 2023 Debating SA season.

The season started with our Middle School team competing in Week 2 and the Junior School teams will compete this week. Already we have seen leadership skills emerging and confidence building in our students.

Last week, our Year 8 Debating team, consisting of students from Year 7 and Year 8 competed against Pembroke College arguing the negative "That teachers should allow students to call them by their first names."

Well done to all students involved and thank you to Caleb (Year 10) for coaching so diligently.
