Our New Houses for 2023

The House Captains have been working hard over the past few months to rebrand each House with an image that better reflects the school’s connection to our community, history and our First Nation, the Boon Wurrung (Bunurong) People.

Nicholas and Ineka are the House Captains for Murrum House, previously known as Red House. Murrum House have adopted a native animal as their mascot and created a new chant for the house. Murrum means Joey Kangaroo in the native language of the Boon Wurrung People. Boon Wurrung or Bunurong language is the language of the people who first lived on this land. Murrum House chose the Joey Kangaroo because it suits their colour and many kangaroos live on the red Australian desert which is the colour of the land. It also represents the Aboriginal flag of black, yellow and RED.

The new Murrum House chant is:

We are Murrum we are proud.

We aren’t quiet, we are LOUD!

We are the best, move all the rest.

Gooooooo MURRUM!!

Elliot and Clementine have announced the exciting new name and chant for Blue House. The new House name is Dulai Wurrung (pronounced Doo-lay Wuh-rung), which in the local Boon Wurrung language means platypus. Platypuses are a very common and well-known mammal around Victoria and Australia. This was chosen as it fits the House colour because platypuses live in the waterways. Platypuses make their home in nearby freshwater creeks and lakes.

The new Dulai Wurrung House chant is:

Turn on the radio, what do you hear?

Dulai Wurrung, Dulai Wurrung, give us a cheer!

Yellow-tailed black cockatoo is the new native animal mascot and Yanggai (pronounced Yang-guy) is the new House name for the former Gold House. Hugh and Claire are excited about their new image and chose Yanggai as it is a yellow-tailed black cockatoo in the local Bunurong language. This cockatoo lives in the South-East part of Australia. A cool thing about the cockatoo is its connection to the sun which are both yellow. The Captains thought of the sun because the yellow-tailed black cockatoo flies in the bright sky with a strong connection between both the land and the sky.

The new Yanggai House chant is:

Hold up wait a minute, let me put some spirit in it!

Yanggai break it down, knock this team straight out of town!

Chamath and Billy are the 2023 Green House Captains, but they sought a new change. They have changed their House name from Green House to Gurrborra, which is from the Boon Wurrung language of the Boon Wurrung People, the traditional custodians of the land Murrumbeena Primary School is on. Gurrborra is the Boon Wurrung (Bunurong) word for koala. Even though a koala is not green, there is a reason they chose it. Koalas eat and hang around eucalyptus trees which are green. The new name Gurrborra comes with its own special House chant.
