Principal's News

Dear Parents and Carers,
I do hope all of our Mums enjoyed a wonderful day last Sunday for Mother’s Day, certainly the beautiful weather played its part.
Today our Grade 5 & 6 pupils will attend an education session entitled “Drug Proofing Our Kids” with Tim Powell from “Values For Life.” This group has been visiting our school for many years and last night Tim presented to a group of 26 parents and teachers about the content he would be delivering today.
Unfortunately, we all recognise that drugs and alcohol will be temptations that all of our children will probably need to come to terms with at some stage in their life, however Tim spent quite a bit of last night’s presentation highlighting the dangers of immature brains (less than 25 years of age) being exposed to these chemicals before they have fully developed.
We would probably all recognise that we simply can’t expect that our precious children will NEVER come into contact with alcohol, nicotine or even illicit drugs so what can we do as parents and teachers to equip them to handle these situations responsibly?
Tim’s message to us all last night was primarily about establishing and nurturing the kind of relationship with our children where our children can come to us and talk about these issues as they arise and as they (may) find themselves in situations that they feel uncomfortable or out of control. We need to set good examples in relation to drugs and alcohol and to set reasonable boundaries for our children, which will naturally shift as they grow and are capable of taking on more responsibility for their decisions as they mature.
Tim is an excellent presenter and I am confident our senior students will learn a lot today from him.
