World Environment Day

Last Monday, June 5th, was World Environment Day. The theme for this year is #BeatPlasticPollution. World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.

World Environment aims to shine a spotlight on climate action, nature action and pollution action while encouraging everyone, everywhere to live sustainably. While our individual consumption choices do make a difference, it is collective action that will create the transformative environmental change we need, so we can advance to a more sustainable and just Earth, where everyone can flourish.

Some of the important aspects of learning about our Environment include:

  1. Environmental education: helps students understand the importance of protecting the environment and preserving natural resources for future generations.
  2. Climate change: Understanding the impacts of climate change and how to reduce carbon footprint can be started in elementary school and have a real impact as children grow up
  3. Active citizenship: Children learn about how they can make a difference in their own community, such as recycling, conserving energy, and protecting endangered species.
  4. Interdependence: helps children understand that everything in the world is interconnected, and how our actions can have a direct impact on the planet.
  5. Encouraging curiosity and creativity: promotes curiosity and creativity in children, leading them to want to explore and learn more about the world around them.

Across Semester Two, each of our Learning Communities will focus on learning about the environment. We will be planning for Term 3 over the next few weeks.
