Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts, foundation students completed their rainbow cloud. They then were introduced to symmetry and printmaking, where they painted one side of a butterfly, which then allowed them to create a print on the other side.

Year 1/2 students acknowledged reconciliation week, by understanding the importance and purpose of our Australian eucalyptus tree (gum/manna gum tree). Students were able to experiment with printmaking by using crayons to create a textured rubbing of a eucalyptus leaf. Students then were able to make their own textured rubbing eucalyptus tree.

Year 3 to 6 students also acknowledged reconciliation week by looking at our Australian animals, where they also explored how to create textured rubbings by using various textured objects. This then allowed the students to create an Australian textured animal art piece.

Culture Studies

Last week in Culture Studies, students were introduced to the Turkish culture.

Where we started to look at where Turkey is located on the world map, their core values, the capital city of Turkey, population, the currency they use and the meaning of their flag. Students were then able to make their own Turkish flag. Students learnt about the significance of National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. They decorated paper hands which represents coming together as one nation. These beautiful hands have been displayed in our entrance.

PE

In PE for the last 2 weeks students have been introduced to AFL. Some of our students have had some exposure to AFL with some playing at club level, but many of our students are having a go for the first time or without to much exposure. As a result it was just a basic introduction to the skills and rules of AFL. We started off with some invasion warm up games, followed by the key fundamentals of handball, kicking and marking. Students really picked up on these ideas very quickly and were able to get involved at a good level.

This week, we had a coach from AFL Victoria come to the school and teach the students more techniques of AFL, and again it was pleasing to see the progress of all students as they become for familiar and confident using an oval shaped ball.

Health

Over the past two weeks in health students have been exploring coping strategies. This is in regards to when they have strong emotions, particularly around anger, stress and fear. We discussed how these emotions might build up and the situations that we might be in to cause us to feel this way. We then explored coping strategies for ourselves on how to manage our emotions and to become more calm and relaxed. Strategies have included balloon breathing, 5 deep breathes, time out, going for a walk, having a drink, changing focus onto something else and many more. Hopefully our students and your child can practise some of these strategies when they are getting upset.

Kingston District Cross Country

Last week on Tuesday 23rd May 33 students from grade 3-6 jumped on a bus and went off in great spirits to represent our school at the Kingston Division Cross Country event.

It was a fantastic morning of competition running and all of our students tried extremely hard and represented our school very well. We had some great results with Luke M in grade 4 finishing 4th in his race and Marine finishing 16th in her race. The top 10 from each race progresses through to the next stage, and as a result Luke progressing through to the District competition.

Division Cross Country

On Tuesday 30th May, Luke went to Division Cross Country to represent Le Page and Kingston District at the division cross country at Karkarook Park. He ran extremely well and we are very proud of his efforts. It was a really strong competition and Luke finished 27th overall. Congratulations and well done Luke on an awesome effort.

Library Newsletter

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a massive success! Thank you to everybody who came and bought books, posters and stationery, and to all the helpers, both student and staff. We could not have done it without all of you.

Scholastic makes projections about how much certain fairs will make depending on school size. They projected Le Page was going to make $1500. Instead, we made $4000! This is a great effort, and Scholastic was very impressed. With the commission from the fair, we will be able to get many new books and resources for the library area. Again, thank you to everybody who supported our fair.

Our Pirate Dress Up Day was also hugely successful. Lots of kids looked simply arrrrmazing, and the gold coin donations will go towards our library as well.

We will have a second fair later this year, so keep an eye out for more information.

Last Wednesday was Simultaneous Storytime Day. We ran a special library session and watched live as the author and illustrator of “The Speedy Sloth” read their book aloud from Sydney Zoo. The kids learnt how to draw a sloth and were able to look at the book or do some colouring. Thank you to everybody who came.
