Year 9 Hike Camp

On Monday 22nd May twenty-two Year 9 Outdoor Education students and four staff took part in an overnight hike to the Mount Samaria State Park.

The students hiked a total of 15km, with an elevation gain of 514m.

The purpose of the hike was for students to develop an understanding of human impacts on the environment as well as exploring the changes in vegetation across the landscape.

Students also practised minimal impact hiking strategies, packing a hiking pack, setting up a tent and using a trangia (outdoor stove). It was wonderful to see the students build connections with each other, offer support and encouragement and have fun!

Student Recaps:

1.My favourite part of the hike was the campfire and going to the waterfall. The campfire was nice and relaxing and the waterfall was so pretty

2. I learnt that I should not make my backpack too heavy because it will slow you down.

3. I am proud that my tent partner and I were so quick at setting up and packing, all while not littering or forgetting anything!

Student VA

I enjoyed being able to experience new things and make more friends during the hike camp. I got to learn about the history of Mount Samaria. I am most proud of being able to get to the summit of Mount Samaria with everyone. Student LE

On the hike I really enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Mt Samaria State Park. I learnt how to cope with challenges and how to get up, wearing a full hiking pack, after I fell down! I am really proud of how far we walked, and the fact that I climbed a mountain.

Student EB

1. My favourite part of the hike camp was making it to the top of Mount Samaria, because of the view.

2. I learnt to put thermals and warm clothes on before you get cold.

3. I am most proud of making it to the end of the hike especially walking up the steep hills.

Student LR

My favourite part of the hike was meeting new people. I learnt how to pack a backpack so that all the necessary equipment fit in without all the weight being all on my shoulders. I am most proud of how far we walked. Student GM
