PYP Around the School

It is getting to the pointy end of our units of inquiry! At the end of next week, students from Years 1-6 will have engaged in three units of inquiry this semester and our Preps will have explored two! A quick recap of what our students have been focused on at each yeat level in their current unit of inquiry.

Preps have looked at the concept of family, personal story and in particular, since returning the school after remote learning, thought about their connection to their Prep/school family.

For the Year 1/2 the concepts of invention, innovation and problem solving have been studied.

The 3/4s have engaged in a ‘How we express ourselves’ unit of inquiry centered on the way arts are used to express ideas, stories and our own beliefs.

The 5/6s have looked at the consequences of significant historical events and the perspectives around these events.

So what have students learned during this last unit of inquiry and what have they been doing? Below are some images and captions which give you an insight into some of the work that has been going on. Perhaps even more important than this, however,  is the thinking that cannot be captured in an image, the rich discussions and clashes of ideas, the growth in understandings.  Being able to share some of these ‘hard to capture’ moments of learning will be our goal moving forward. I also recommend that you stay tuned to Seesaw as we are continuing to use this platform to capture your child’s learning.

The Year 5/6 wall where students demonstrated the connection between various historical events. This week students have explored border changes and cultural shifts that have resulted from significant events.

The Year 3/4s are all involved in a personal inquiry where they have chosen an art form to share an important message/story. Examples include: students creating paintings (first design above) to share how firemen are superheroes; students creating films on the life of a plastic coffee cup; students creating a collage to show the story of Elwood/the bay.

The Year 1/2s busy inventing in response to a problem they see in the world. Above you can see the first sketch of an idea to help people get upstairs if they are nor able-bodied. You can also see a car boat.

The Preps have been learning about working together as a Prep family and the ways we can be kind to each other. They have been thinking about being ‘thinkers’ who can problem solve and make thoughtful decisions.
