CSEN Online Play In A Day

By Allen Dickson ( Enrichment Coordinator)

Last Monday, three teams of BHCS Secondary Drama students took part in the first ever CSEN Online Play In A Day... So how do you do a "play in a day" online?

Twelve teams met via Zoom and were given the subject of the play – to create a three scene Zoom Soap Opera.

Next on the agenda was devising the characters – Clay Gold, Vermillion Harington, Magenta Rose, Cliff Canyon, Rexona Pumice… plus many other names that you would only see in the credits of ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’. With relationships established, it was time for the first challenge – to align the Zoom boxes so that each character was looking at the character they were talking to. Imagine a romantic moment… so close but kept apart by the borders of the box. Romeo and Juliet had it easier!

Scene Two involved a vital piece of evidence being passed from box to box – birth certificates, mugs, forks and even a knife (that was used for nefarious dramatic ends)… each pass advancing the drama in the plot.

The final challenge was all about changing the virtual background to change the context (and therefore meaning) of the final scenes. In these scenes we had characters being pushed off cliffs, some standing on a court and some being placed behind bars.

The BHCS students did the school proud, creating some very entertaining and funny ‘Zoomovie’ shorts. The Junior team deserves particular mention in achieving second in the judges’ votes.

Like sands through the hourglass… so ends Play In A Day 2020.

'Making Your Story Come Alive' Writing Workshop

On Tuesday some of our brightest Grade 5/6 writers took part in an online writing workshop with Australian Author Aleesah Darlison. Here is one student's reflection on the day.

The Writing workshop by Aleesah Darlison was super fun because we got to write lots of pieces of funny writing and learn lots of new tricks we can now include in our writing. We learnt that when we are writing, we can think about what is going to happen next in the story by just putting our head down and closing our eyes... then imagine where we are in your story. Imagine the sights, sounds, smells and textures and then that gets us to the next part of the story.
I really enjoyed the Writing Workshop!

Science Week - Virtual Escape Room

By Jackie Eastwood ( Science Teacher )

In Science Week, STILE; our online science platform; released an Escape Room Competition called Deep Blue which was all about science in the sea. We did it in groups from  Years 7-10, and the students had a great time completing all the tasks.

Here are some of their comments.

I really enjoyed the escape room, it was good to do something different. It was also good to work with friends.

The science week escape room, 'Deep Blue', was overall a rather enjoyable experience. I like the format of having set spaces and immediate responses for the answers put in.
