Term 4 Week 1 Snapshot
Welcome to Week 1, Term 4 of Home Learning
Welcome to Term 4, Week 1. We trust that you are all well rested after the two week break and ready for Term 4!
Please read the following overview of the learning tasks for Week 1 of Term 4. The daily schedule, with additional instructions and resources, will continue to be posted on Google Classroom the night before each day of learning.
If your child has completed the day's tasks, they may be interested in completing one of these optional tasks. These tasks are open-ended, inquiry based and hands-on.
English
An overview of tasks for reading and writing this week are as follows:
READING
Students should be completing at least 20 minutes of independent reading a day as well as completing the tasks set by the teacher.
Students will begin exploring forms of poetry.
Tasks for Week 1 include:
- Reflecting on prior knowledge of poetry
- Analysing a poem of their choice from poems provided
- Understanding the difference between poetry and prose
- Understanding why people read and write poetry
- Reading choice board
WRITING
Students will begin looking at poetry through the structure of a range of forms of poetry.
Tasks for Week 1 include:
- Attending a small group with classroom teacher about understanding how poets write about things that matter to them
- Beginning to generate ideas that matter to students
- Exploring cinquain and nature poems and the structure of each
- Revising, editing and sharing poems in a shared google slide
While writing, we encourage students to use the writing cycle to ensure they are continuously developing and improving their writing.
The writing cycle consists of five stages:
1. Plan
2. Draft
3. Revise
4. Edit
5. Publish
Word Study
Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. Grades 4A, 4B, 4C and 4D will begin exploring Rule 17, a spelling rule known as "The FSZL Gang", which explains when to double f, s, z and l. 4E will begin exploring Rule 25, a spelling rule which explains when to use "ck" when spelling words. The "bootcamp" process allows students to practice the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students are beginning to explore chance and probability. They are also encouraged to play number games or use Mathletics to continue practicing basic number skills.
Tasks for Week 1 include:
- Completing a chance and probability pre-test on Essential Assessment
- Understanding chance and probability terms such as likely, unlikely, even chance, certain and impossible
- Attending a small group with classroom teacher where they find the probability to an answer of a question and create a tally chart to compare results
- Completing Mathletics tasks
- Playing a probability game
- Conducting a spinner experiment through a five step process
- Mental Maths sums - how many can they complete in two minutes?
Unit of Inquiry
This week, students are continuing to explore the unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves. Students will inquire into the line of inquiry, 'Connecting with the arts influences people' .
Tasks for Week 1 include:
- Exploring different cultures and how they express themselves artistically.
- What symbols or elements are used in the artforms shown?
- Why do different cultures create different artforms?
- Comparing with things students have seen in other cultures or take part in their own culture
Wellbeing
This week the students will be learning about the power of showing kindness to others. They will think about how an act of kindness makes the giver and receiver feel. The students will be encouraged to show kindness to others in their household throughout the week.
