JPPS Virtual House Cross Country – Term 4 Week 1

During the first week of next Term, Jells Park will be holding a Virtual House Cross Country Event as the PE task for that week.

This will be a whole school House Competition where students will be asked to time themselves running the required distance based on the year they were born. We will use an app like Strava to measure distances and time.

Over the school holidays, students may wish to practice for their cross country run and build on their stamina and persistence.

The goal is to be able to run the full distance without stopping (1km, 2km or 3km)

Students born 2012 and above will run 1 KM

Students born 2010 and 2011 will run 2 KM

Students born 2009 and below will run 3 KM

Here are some steps the students can follow to increase their stamina and persistence:-

  1. See how far you can run without stopping
  2. If you need to stop, Walk for about 30 seconds to a minute
  3. Try to run for as long as you can again aiming for at least the amount of time that you just walked for
  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 till the end of the full distance.
  5. Record the time it has taken you to run your allocated distance.

With the assistance of an adult, measure out a course that you know the distance of and work out how many laps of that course make up your full cross country event distance. Eg. 1 lap of a local football oval is roughly 400 m. therefore:-

A 1km event is 2 ½ laps

A 2km event is 5 laps.

A 3km event is 7 ½ laps

When finished - talk to a family member or a friend about how you went, include details such as your time, how you felt before, during and after the run and if you had any strategies to help you to perform your best or if there is anything you would do differently next time.

Don’t forget to warm up and stretch before your run, and cool down and recover with lots of fluids after you have finished.

Your goal is to run the required distance without stopping! Once you have achieved this, you can focus on your speed to improve your time.
