MANAGED INDIVIDUAL PATHWAYS UPDATE

UNIVERSITY VISITS

So far this term year 9 students visited Deakin University Geelong and

for many students, it was their first time in a university lecture theatre.

The students were provided with information about the general aspects

of university life, entry requirements and the unique characteristics of

Deakin. Students had a comprehensive tour of the Geelong campus.

Our year 10 students visited Deakin University Burwood. Year 10

students are no strangers to university lectures and were shown around

campus by Deakin students.

This program has operated for the last decade and we are now able to

boast many Deakin Graduates from both the Geelong and Burwood

campuses. Not to mention Latrobe, Monash and Melbourne.

GUEST SPEAKER

Last month Sacha Kaluri addressed both year 9 and 10 students. She is

an Entrepreneur, Author and Broadcaster who has spoken with more

than one million teenagers over the past 18 years. She talks to

students about the real issues young people experience every day. Her

recently released book is titled the two worlds of your teenager. She can

be found at www. sachakaluri.com

MANAGED INDIVIDUAL PATHWAYS (MIPS) MONTH

March was MIPS month and all students in years 7 to 10 were expected

to complete their yearly plan. It may be timely to ask your son or

daughter some key aspects of their plan and what they hope to achieve

this year.

MIPs Online provides a space in which young people can record, reflect

on and link essential learning activities with their life, learning and work

goals. Students use MIPs Online to articulate their skills and values,

plan ahead, learn about their options and begin thinking of the subjects

they need to take in secondary school and the Tertiary courses they

need to pursue to achieve their career goal. For more details, please ask

your son or daughter to log you into their plan.

COMING UP

Coming up in term 2, years 10 students will be visiting The Age careers

expo at Caulfield racecourse and will visit Latrobe University in

Bundoora. Years 7, 8 and 10 will be undertaking the careers match

survey.

Year 9 students will be preparing to undergo the Morrisby careers

survey at the start of term 3. More details will be provided to you later in

term 2.

PARENTS AS THE CAREER COACH

On a final note, evidence indicates that parents are the single most

significant influence on their child's education and career decisions. The

Face-to-Face report produced in 2010 by the National Youth Agency in

England identified parents and careers as the most common first point of

call for career development information, advice and guidance for young

people. Other research similarly points to the critical role of parents in

the career development of their children, especially in the early stages

rather than in the later stages of their education (Watson and McMahon, 2003).
