EXCEL Sports Program

Rugby 7's Gala Day

On Wednesday 8th August the Year 8 and 9 EXCEL Sport Classes went to Moorabbin Rugby Union Club to participate in the East Rugby 7s Gala Day. Patterson River Secondary entered one boys and girls team in the Under 14 and Under 16 divisions. The boys teams were playing state representative players but continued to fight their way through games and never gave up regardless of the score.

The  Under 16 girls team were fantastic throughout the day, laying hard tackles and passing and running the ball to the try lines. They narrowly missed progressing to the State finals and finished second in their pool. The Under 14 girls team played in the grand final and qualified trough to the State Finals on Wednesday 5th September at Box Hill Rugby Union Club. So proud of all the students for trying a new sport and representing the College with distinction.

Thank you to Ms. Robbins and Mr. Andriessen for assisting on the day.

Kasey Smith competes in State Softball Team

Kasey Smith was selected to be a part of the Victorian Team though School Sport Victoria (SSV). The team travelled to Cairns in late May 2018 to compete in the National Championships. Facing the ACT side in their final game, the Victorians put their best game forward to close out their tournament with a 10-4 loss. The School Sport Victoria U17 Girls Team has wrapped up their U17 School Sport Australia National Championships campaign with a very honourable 6th place finish!

Kasey enjoyed her experience in a state team and hopes to play in the team in years to come as she is only 14 years old in an U17 Team. Patterson River Secondary College is beyond impressed with Kasey’s achievement.

2018 Junior Girls Basketball Champions Cup

The following students qualified for the 2018 Junior Girls Basketball Champions Cup Tournament, which is Basketball Victoria's Elite Schools tournament to determine the State Champions in each age division. There were 18 schools in Victoria invited to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. On Monday 13th August the team played against Catholic Ladies College and Maribyrnong College. Our first game was a tightly fought contest and came down to the wire with the result unfortunately not going our way. The second game was a tough contest with many state representatives playing for Maribyrnong College. A fantastic learning experience with an under sized team that represented the school with distinction. Well done to Hayley Ponchard, Indiah Perkins, Madison Smith, Kristine Roberts, Holly Stephens, Gemma Karp, Ruby Griffiths Hayes, Mikayla Sinclair and Talzyn Roberts. A pleasure to coach.

Junior Lacrosse

On Friday 14th September the Year 8 EXCEL Sport class entered a boys and girls team into the Lacrosse School Championships at Paisley Park, Altona. After a five week training block at school the students were well prepared for this event. For the first time in the program, both the boys and girls finished top of their respective pools to play off in a semi-final. The boys played against Emmanuel College and finished the game tied 5-5. The final went into extra time but unfortunately we lost 5-7. A fantastic effort but an opportunity lost. The girls won their semi-final 12-2 and then played Williamstown High School in the grand final. Williamstown High School have held a monopoly on this event over the years and have teams of lacrosse players. Patterson River SC girls played a sensational game and won the State Lacrosse title 7-6. A fantastic day for the students and the College. Thank you to Mrs. Ford for her assistance throughout the day.
