Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

Following on from my article two weeks ago about supporting students and families who struggle to get to school in the morning, the leaders and I would like to introduce Comfort Club. With generous support from Ms Moncur, we would like to offer a soft landing to school each day.  We will have a couple of leaders, a hot drink and a warm welcome waiting for you at school from 8.15am in the Wellness Centre. The leaders plan to ease students into their day with a gentle chat and collegial support. If you think this opportunity would be helpful, please just turn up whenever you arrive at school.

Work Ready, Life Ready

Our Year Eleven Mokare students welcomed Mr Michael McPhail last Friday.

Not yet 30, Michael was elected Deputy Mayor for East Fremantle at 20 where he served for eight years.  He completed a year in London as part of his undergraduate degree course and more recently was awarded the Schwarzman Scholarship to study a Master's in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Michael spoke gently to the students about how and why he has made the decisions he has, and how his choices have enriched his life. He encouraged the students to be extraordinary and to make uncomfortable choices because they will provide the most growth opportunities. He spoke beautifully and held the students' attention.  Please see Lucas Ravenhill’s thoughts below.

In Work Ready Life Ready on Friday last week, the Year Eleven Mokare students had Michael McPhail come talk to us about his own personal experiences out of school and about how important it is to make the most of opportunities presented in front of you. The Year Elevens were able to take away some very helpful information that will help them with making important decisions regarding the future. One point that everyone took away from the talk was that taking the path that is the most uncomfortable for you may be the best decision you take. It allowed us to open up our eyes and realise how beneficial studying overseas or even in other states may help our futures. Some of his personal experiences included working as Deputy Mayor for East Fremantle for eight years from the age of 20, as well as being awarded the Schwarzman Scholarship to study a Master's in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing where he learnt a lot about the Chinese lifestyle and realised how lucky we are as Australians. Hopefully in the near future we will see him working in the Australian Government as that is a goal of his.

All the students thoroughly enjoyed the talk and took some helpful tips out of it.
