5-8 Community News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Some really positive experiences continue to occur in the 5-8 Community.  In Years 7 and 8, students are further developing their understanding of Earth and Space by exploring rock formation on planets within space.

In the next number of weeks, students in Years 6 and 7 will begin exploring the Life Relationships unit of work, whereby the students will engage in conversations about gender, identity, and respectful relationships in an enriching and engaging learning environment. This will be hosted by Realtalk.

More recently, there has been a small change to TA, with students now starting the week in their Year Level spaces (please see the visual). This change has been welcomed and is a good opportunity for the students to check in with their TAs, chat about their weekends, and for staff to continue to reiterate our theme of high expectations.

For the remainder of the week in TA, the Resilience Project continues to drive our learning spaces.  The learning this week has students exploring the benefits of nature and what nature has to offer for our spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

Importantly, the process for student leadership for 2023 has started. If your child is eager to join the College Leadership Team, now is the time to start those conversations at home as they have started at the College. The students in 2023, will lead end-of-term assemblies and work closely with Mr Poppa and Ms Morrissey.

With lunchtime activities commencing, we strongly encourage you to have conversations with your children about attending, particularly if they are finding themselves bored and uninterested in the schoolyard.  We offer a lunchtime activity each day, catered to a variety of interests. The attached poster, which can also be found in our learning spaces shows the activities on offer. There are a number of activities that provide exceptional opportunities, further developing positive relationships/friendships but also creating a very safe space for our children.

The boxing and netball activities have been a real hit on Monday and Tuesday afternoons with a total of ten teams. Last term’s winners of the inaugural cup are pictured in our gallery below. The cup will be up for grabs again this term.

Some worthy reminders:

  • Encourage students to seek help from adults, where needed. If there is a challenge in the classroom where your child is not sure of a learning task or a concern outside of the learning space, please get into contact with your child's TA, or even better, encourage the children to seek us out.
  • Please continue to ensure your child is in the correct uniform. If they do not have the correct uniform, a note must be provided. If a note isn't provided, they will be on the detention list.  Hoodies are not permitted at all. Your child will be asked to take them off completely. Plain blue socks are only acceptable, not white.
  • TA - Please remind students about the importance of getting to TA on time. As you will be aware, TA commences at 8:50am and concludes at 9:10am.
  • Healthy diet - Plenty of fruit throughout the day and sandwiches packed with all kinds of salad, will ensure that our children are remaining healthy. What I notice at recess and lunchtime is that our students are very active. It's brilliant! Children need healthy food to ensure that they are restoring their depleted energy levels.
