Years 5/6 Girls Football

The Years 5/6 girls footy was held during Week 2 in Moama. It was going to be a very cold day in singlets and shorts for the young AFLW stars but the perfect day to be running around to get warm. It was a very busy bus ride for Miss Corbo and I as we had to explain all positions on the ground to the girls just for them to forget them by the time we got off the bus.

Once everyone was confident where they were playing, it was time to start our day. It was an electric start as the girls triumphed, winning their first two games for the day. The girls battled hard all day and ended up winning three out of their five games.

The girls demonstrated excellent resilience after constantly bouncing back from injuries and some other challenges throughout the day. A big thank you to Miss Corbo who filled many roles for the day including goal umpire, team medic and the big spender at maccas to get the girls an ice cream. Well done to all girls who competed hard all day as a team and demonstrated great sportsmanship! Watch this space as I think we have a few AFLW stars on the way.

Years 9/10 Girls Football

The stage was set for a big day on the field for the Years 7-10 girls. The Years 7 and 8 girls showed some great courage stepping up to compete in the Intermediate girls footy competition in order to get a full side. The girls didn’t have a great start against the overall winners for the day. However after a big goal from Miley, the girls started to find some form. A tight contest against Kyabram P-12 saw our girls fall just short, but there were plenty of positive signs from the girls. Our last match against Rochester was a high intensity match of footy and although the results didn’t fall our way the girls remained positive. It was a very good team display from the girls and they represented the school very well!

7/8 Boys Football

The Years 7 and 8 boys footy was held in Week 1 of term. Luck came our way as the sun was out in the middle of winter to allow our boys to have a great day of footy. Unfortunately the Year 7 boys didn’t have a great day on the scoreboard, although they did have a great day out on the field. They showed a great amount of heart and played the match in a great spirit. Archer Backway, Antony De Pasquale, Wil Harrison, James Priest and Nicholas Barbagallo were forces to be reckoned with all day.

The Year 8 boys were building something special at the Rochester Recreation Reserve. The boys put on a great team performance to overcome three sides. Unfortunately they just dropped short to eventual winners, St Joes. It was tough selecting a list of best players as there was a great contribution from them all, but Jedd Turpin, Marley Gordon, Riley Carver, Cooper O’Neill and Jimmy Hargreaves were all checked for leather poisoning after the match.

Great team performances from both sides! Thank you to Bailey White who took on the responsibility of umpiring. Well done to Mr Hill and Mr Archer who coached the young and upcoming AFL stars!

Loddon Mallee Soccer

Last week the Years 7 and 8s made an early trip to Bendigo to compete in the Loddon Mallee Soccer. The boys were up and about early as they discussed game tactics all the way there, almost making Mr Hill go to sleep.

Unfortunately tactics flew out the window as soon as the whistle blew and the Year 7s were quickly fighting to stay in the game. A 6-0 deficit at half time meant there were lots of changes made in order to fight back. Wil Harrison quickly made an impact in the second half, scoring a penalty. Some great defensive efforts from Isaac Grealy and Nicholas Barbagallo were some positive signs for the boys in the last half. Antony De Pasquale also hit the scoreboard after a great pass from Wil. Well done to the boys who represented the school well!

The Year 8 boys didn’t have much luck in their first round match-up, going down 6-0. Things weren’t all doom and gloom as the boys showed many positive signs during the match. They battled hard in the second round and looked much better. It was a great team effort put in but they just fell short in the second round. Jedd Turpin and Marley Gordon fought hard all day to try and get the boys over the line. The boys made the school very proud of their achievements.  Thank you to Mr Hill for coaching the Year 8 boys.

Loddon Mallee Netball

We had plenty of teams travel to compete in the Loddon Mallee Netball held in Bendigo. After being short of bus seats during the lead up, maths whizz Mr Hill ran his calculations and had it all sorted to ensure everyone made it to Bendigo. The day didn’t start as planned with all teams finding themselves down after the first round. The Year 7 girls never gave up and battled hard in all their matches. Unfortunately the results didn’t fall their way, but they put in a great team effort. Thank you to Miss Johns for coaching the girls.

The Years 9/10 girls struggled early to work as a team but they quickly put it together and played in some high intensity matches all day. Although the results didn’t fall their way, the girls competed hard and made the opposition work hard for the win. Thank you to Mrs Westerveld for coaching the girls.

The Years 9/10 boys got a surprise early with the high the quality at regional level. This didn’t stop them from giving it their all during their matches. They battled hard but were just outclassed by a stronger opponent. Thank you to Claire for coaching the boys.

The Years 11/12 boys got a big wake up call in their first round. Thank you to Miss Johns and Mrs Westerveld for stepping in to coach as I was at soccer. After getting towelled up by a much better side the boys were deflated and ready to call it a day. That was until I finally arrived, despite getting lost many times trying to find the netball courts. I must’ve found the boys' spirits on my journey to the Bendigo Stadium, as their effort and intensity lifted for the last round match-up. Despite playing on a bloke that was 8m tall and could put his hand over the ring, Jordan O’Neill and Cody Price worked together perfectly to stop him. We made them battle hard all day and just fell short of a win. The boys did a great job putting together a great team effort and showing their resilience after bouncing back from their first round.
