Week 1 Sports Results

Summer sport is again underway. Our tennis, cricket and water polo teams were back in action last weekend and it was pleasing that all players turned up as expected.

The Primary B1 tennis team had a close win against Rostrevor. A few boys were not wearing the tennis shirts provided in Term 1, but all boys showed up and demonstrated the right spirit throughout the close competition.

The Primary B2 tennis team found the going tough against Scotch, only winning two sets. Despite the result, Ms Schenk was pleased with spirit and sportsmanship of the boys.

The Primary C (Year 5) tennis team, under Mr Brealey’s expert guidance, went down to Westminster three sets to six sets. Angus Carmody was the standout with two wins from two matches.

The Year 4/5 cricket team performed well against St Peters. Although the team lost by 28 runs, the match was competitive with many different players achieving personal milestones throughout the game.

Honouring Your Commitment

It has been brought to my attention that numerous students who participated in Term 1 activities have decided not to honour their commitment to their nominated teams in Term 4. What is most disappointing about this, besides the pressure that it places on numbers within different teams, is that there has not been any communication from families about their withdrawal from a group. By withdrawing without notification, some teams have now been left on the edge of playing short each week which is unfair. Turning up to games without a full team is not a good look for the school nor fair to those who are committed.

It is expected that unless circumstances prevent your son from attending, that your child honours his commitment to the program this term. If for some reason your child cannot participate, your son’s coaches or I require some communication about this.

Uniforms

Some students still have not returned their winter sports uniforms. Please return:

  • Football jumpers
  • Soccer shirts
  • Basketball singlets

Also, it essential that students are well-organised and attend all sporting matches in the uniforms provided. Some players failed to attend in the correct uniforms which led to the Blackfriars’ team looking disorganised. Please attend in the correct uniforms or you run the risk of the coaches refusing to let you take the court or field.

Outstanding Achievements

Congratulations to Zavier Brauer (6V) on his inclusion in the South Australian U12 Rugby team that toured Darwin during the recent holiday break. The South Aussie boys found the going tough against the traditionally strong rugby states, but enjoyed the experience of representing the state in the national championships. Well done, Zavier.

Congratulations to Christian Liappis (6V) for his recent tennis exploits. Christian was recently selected in the North Adelaide SAPSASA District Tennis team. He will be participating in the SAPSASA championships mid-term.

Christian also represented the school in the Drive Tennis team on the weekend. This is a remarkable achievement for a Year 6 student, considering that he is competing against Year 12 students. He also won his first game! I heard his opponent was a Year 11 student. Congratulations, Christian!

Milo Cricket Clinics

On Monday 23 October, Jacob and Giang from the SACA came to Blackfriars to run some cricket clinics. Students from Reception – Year 4 ran through skills circuits that focused on batting, throwing and catching and bowling. This is a part of their hitting and striking units.

The students had a good time and got to practice some new skills with different equipment.

Best of luck this weekend.
