Environmental Science

Environmental Science may not be a subject you hear a lot about when talking about VCE subjects, but it is definitely not a subject you should overlook. Where most studies use textbooks and computers for information, in Environmental Science we venture out and find our own information from the world around us. Journeying to Mentone Beach, Illaroo Reserve and Ricketts Point Marine Reserve, Miss Bendall’s Unit 1 & 2 Environmental Science class monitored the effect that everyday recreation has on the environment around us. We measured the levels of bare ground and leaf litter as well as looking at evidence of animals and recreational activities (and ate hot chips), to gain a better understanding of how we can prevent damage to the ecosystems in Mentone. We learnt that in order to have a healthy environment, we need to ensure that when we are out and about, we respect the living things around us, clear our litter and only participate in recreation that is not harmful. We are very grateful to Miss Bendall for the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and this is not an experience we will forget anytime soon.

English

Students in Year 9 to 11 are undertaking English exams which is of great benefit to their time-management skill development. Following exams, they will be working on honing key areas of the course which directly relate to preparation for Year 12.

Please assist your daughter in reminding them that Year 10s are advised to read Generals Die in Bed, and Year 11s Brooklyn during this period and over the term holidays for our early units of work in term 3.

ELC Excursion to Sovereign Hill

Last Friday, the ELC class went to Sovereign Hill with Ms Xanthopoulos and Ms Feng. Wanna was the only student to find real gold while Quinn was excited with her 'fake' gold. The students ate different lollies and found the acid drops were their favourite ones. Everyone was excited to make candles but some then got frightened going down the mine pit as there was no light. The students were so tired that they snored all the way back to Melbourne.

World Challenge

With the end of term approaching quickly, it may be a good idea to start looking for some of the gear required for the Training Camp on Saturday 28 July and Sunday 29 July. Expect conditions to be cold (like Nepal) and maybe wet so please ensure you have good waterproof shells, warm clothing and sleeping bag. A kit list is listed on the World Challenge website.

Hint #13: Continue practicing your Nepali phrases as you may need them to converse on the Training Camp.
