VCE Arts Exhibition: Artwork in Focus

Conveying beauty and emotion in his artwork titled “Blue Forest”,

Lucas S of 12 J shares the inspiration behind his work. Blue Forest is being showcased to promote the VCE Arts Exhibition that runs from

11-22 November, Tunnel Vision Gallery, DSC.

Blue Forest is about the changing of landscapes and our environment due to climate change. In this case it covers the issue of rising sea levels. In order to create a sense of familiarity and relatability, I wanted the environment/eco system to mimic that of Australia.

The reason for this is because when an issue doesn’t directly affect someone, they tend to ignore it. So by creating something that depicts the impact of climate change on our own country, it helps bring the issue to the fore and encourages us to act upon it.

The figure depicts mother nature in human form. Rather than go in the direction of a mermaid or sea-creature,  I wanted to create a sense of familiarity and connection to humans. The figure represents the suffering of the human race, and depicts drowning as a result of our actions. As our planet will survive longer than any human species, the figure is also an immortal reminder of our human failures. The animals represent the inhabitants of the environment, and addresses the concept of adapting to change.

I’m really happy with how it turned out. I feel I was able to portray the meanings and messages. The overall colour of the piece is nice, and I like how the figure and animals came out.

New Mobile Phone Policy 2020

The Minister for Education released a new Students Using Mobile Phones Policy for all Victorian government schools on 7 October 2019. This policy requires that from Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours, including recess and lunchtime.

All schools are required to have a local school policy on mobile phones that reflects this requirement and provides details for the implementation of the policy at their school. Information on exceptions, enforcement and secure storage of mobile phones is outlined in the Minister's Students using Mobile Phones Policy.

The team at Doncaster Secondary College is asking for the assistance of our parents/carers and students so we are able to localise the policy for our school. Throughout this process we may decide to expand the scope of the local policy to include other personal mobile devices, such as smart watches.
